Right Wing Evangelical Gary McCullough Says Ellen DeGeneres Forced Out of AI because She's a Lesbian

Right wing evangelical Gary McCullough says Ellen DeGeneres forced out because she is a lesbian and "there is a limit on what Christian viewers will tolerate.

I generally stay away from showbiz-type stories, but I find it very interesting that Gary McCullough, a director of Christian Wire, could have the hubris to say I told you so over Ellen DeGeneres' decision to resign as one of the judges on "American Idol." His reason is based on his belief that so-called Christians wouldn't accept a lesbian as a judge on a prime time television show. Er, could the reason for Ellen DeGeneres' departure be that she cannot sing and had no business critiquing the contestants. Last year R&B legend Patti Labelle said that some judges on the show have no business in such a role because they have no experience in that regard.

Lost on Gary McCullough is the fact that Kara DioGuardi has been fired from the show. This had nothing to do with her sexuality, as is the case with DeGeneres. It is amazing how the religious right will twist words and act as though they are the judge and jury of every facet of this country's being. He's an excerpt from his press release:

When it comes to the business relationship between American Idol and Ellen DeGeneres, to the chagrin of Pansy Hilton and a multitude of homo-fascist bloggers, I am on an I-told-you-so roll.

In January, I wrote, "I am confident that the producers of American Idol will be shocked when their market share has cratered, and will in all honesty find a dozen other reasons for the drop in ratings. After all, what successful television producer could have a clue what wholesomeness is as long as they see promoting homosexuality as a virtue."

In May, I wrote, "Here is my next prediction. There will be no left wing social activist as a judge for the tenth season of American Idol. Not only will DeGeneres be gone, she will not be replaced by anyone close to a Rosie O'Donnell wanna-be." The question now is; can American Idol be saved. I say no. Ellen DeGeneres skied over that bull-shark and the audience she drove away will never return. Idol may as well succumb to slobbering panders of Hilton and bring him on as a judge and nuke the fridge.
The moral of the story, contrary to what Gary McCullough believes, is that "American Idol" has run its course and is no longer a ratings bonanza, especially in light of Simon Cowell's departure. This isn't about Ellen DeGeneres being a lesbian host. Clay Aiken came second during one season's competition and has had a good career, despite the fact he is a homosexual. Who cares? Certainly not Hollywood. He says there is a limit to what Christian viewers will tolerate. Really? That sounds like a lot of right wing evangelical BS to me.

Glenn Beck Promotes Auction for Dinner with Andrew Breitbart After he Slandered Black Former USDA Official Shirley Sherrod

Glenn Beck promotes auction for dinner with Andrew Breitbart after modern-day lynching of black former USDA official Shirley Sherrod.

Media Matters: Glenn Beck promotes auction for dinner with Andrew Breitbart. Birds of a feather flock together. In the aftermath of the modern-day lynching of black former USDA official Shirley Sherrod over incident that occurred 24 years ago, Andrew Breitbart is embraced by many conservatives for his propagandist ways.

Aunesti Lee Allen, 3, Shot & Killed by 4 Year Old Playmate, After her Mother, Fiona Lee, Leaves Gun on Kitchen Table

Aunesti Lee Allen, 3, shot and killed by four year old playmate, after her mother, Fiona C. Lee, leaves loaded .45-caliber handgun on kitchen table.

Three year old Aunesti Lee Allen was shot and killed by the four year old son of her mother's boyfriend in an Indianapolis home. According to the Indiana Star, the girl's mother, Fiona C. Lee, 26, was arrested and jailed late Thursday on child neglect and drug charges. Why am I not surprised about the environment the child were in. A police spokesman said the boy picked up the gun, pointed it at Aunesti's head and pulled the trigger. She later died at Riley Hospital for Children. Fiona Lee was preliminarily charged with three counts of neglect of as dependent, felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to the Indy Star.

Of course, the boy and his father, Curtis J. White Sr., 24, are no where to be found. He accompanied Lee to the hospital and left before police were able to speak with him. According to the Indy Star, Lee's other two witnessed the shooting. The .45-caliber handgun was reportedly on a side table in the kitchen in plain view and was "within easy reach of any of the kids," the police said. Why in the world would anyone leave a loaded gun lying around in a home with kids? That is careless, but given the history of the mother, it shouldn't come as a surprise. I would venture to say this isn't the first time she left the gun lying around carelessly.

Her daughter's life is certainly worth more than a $200,000 bond. This tragedy could have been avoided. I would classified her parenting skills as "ghetto parenting."  I hope this tragedy will force her to become a better person and scare her straight. The reality is that some people just don't deserve to become parents.

Abneris Santiago Allowed Boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, to Sexually Molest 11 Y.O. Daughter & Starve Two Sons

Abneris Santiago admits in court that she did nothing to stop her boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, from sexually assaulting her 11 year old daughter & starving her two sons.

How could any mother sit by and watch her children being malnourished and her daughter sexually assaulted by her boyfriend? I can't fathom how anyone could sit idly by and watch such atrocities being unleashed on her children. According to the Dallas Morning News, Abneris Santiago did just that. She admitted in court Friday morning that she did nothing to stop her boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, from sexually abusing her 11 year old daughter and slowly starving her three children over several months in a filthy motel bathroom, the Dallas Morning News said.

Abneris Santiago’s guilty plea came in the middle of her trial in a Dallas County courtroom. Asked by the judge whether she was pleading guilty because she was guilty, Santiago sighed deeply and paused before answering yes. Before the trial, prosecutors offered her a sentence of 50 years, but she rejected it. That offer was withdrawn, and no deal is in place. She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison in the punishment phase of her trial, which began immediately after her plea.

Earlier this week in the same courtroom, the boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, was convicted and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He and Abneris Santiago had one child together, a 1-year-old who was found healthy in their room at the Budget Suites motel near Dallas Love Field. The other children — an 11-year-old girl and two boys, ages 5 and 10 — were rescued from the bathroom last July when an uncle visiting from out of town found them.

I can't begin to imagine the traumatic experience these children have lived through in the months leading up to their rescue. As for the daughter, I pray that she will get the help she needs to get over these horrific acts against her. I wouldn't blame the children one bit if they cut all ties with their mother. No decent woman would ever let anyone hurt her children and not take some type of action. I will say, the only thing Abneris Santiago ever did right is admitting her guilt in the crimes against her children. With any luck, she will look like the Holocaust survivor her children was labeled by witnesses as comparable to.

Robert Freeman, 13, Shot and Killed in Case of Mistaken Identity in Crime-Ridden South Side Chicago Neighborhood

Robert Freeman, 13, murdered in crime plagued Far South Side Chicago neighborhood in a case of mistaken identity, suspects still at large.

How could anyone murder a 13 year old child? Chicago police are seeking the person who killed 13 year old Robert Freeman Wednesday night on the Far South Side of the city. What makes this more tragic is the fact that the gunman reportedly shot the wrong kid, police sources said. Freeman died after being shot multiple times. Another innocent life taken so senselessly.

Dozens of youths were hanging out in the street at 8 p.m. Wednesday when the killers snuck through a thicket of overgrown weeds in an empty lot and opened fire, relatives said. Robert, who moved to West Pullman a few months earlier, had quickly established himself as a friendly face on the block, mowing lawns for pocket money and riding his bicycle with an infectious smile, neighbors said. He attended Oglesby Elementary School, but when his family moved he transferred him out of the Chicago school system in May. Source: Sun Times
Not to speak ill of the dead, but this wasn't Freeman's first brush with trouble, a police source said, according to the Chicago Sun Times. He was arrested fro allegedly throwing bricks at car windows earlier this summer. This doesn't justify why he was killed and as of Friday morning, no suspects are in police custody. It also doesn't help that the area in which the shooting occurred has been plagued with crime. According to the Sun Times, in the past two years there have been two other killings within a block of where Robert was killed. It is time the law enforcement bring Martial Law to the crime-ridden areas of Chicago. There are far too many innocent people, many children, losing their lives at the hands of a handful of thugs.

President Obama's Appearance on "The View" Not About Making History, Meant to Appeal to "Soccer Mom" Demographic

President Obama to appear on "The View" in an effort to appeal to "soccer mom" demographic as his poll numbers continue to slip.

To all the haters, including Gov. Rendell (D-PA), as much as you don't like the fact that President Obama will appear on "The View," is a calculated move that serves a purpose in his mind, at least. We know Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg will lob soft questions his way and it will be all laughs and a really homey atmosphere aimed at soccer moms, a demographic that he is slowly losing right now. Obama has made history, in a roundabout way. He will become the first president to appear on a daytime television chat show. Hardly a major feat, but one you can understand to some degree.

Here's an excerpt from the Financial Times that pretty much sums up why the President decided to appear on "The View:"

Mr Obama’s administration, facing dismal marks even from friendly pollsters, is making a new push to talk to Middle America, trying to recapture some of his old campaign magic before November’s midterm Congressional elections. And all without having to go through the pesky medium of the White House press corps.

Certainly, the president needs all the positive exposure he can get. Polls regularly put his approval rating below 50 per cent, and a new Quinnipiac University survey found that US voters thought – by a margin of 48 to 40 per cent – that he did not deserve to be re-elected in 2012.

This makes alarming reading in Mr Obama’s Washington, where Democrats could lose control of the House and even the Senate. If the president thinks it’s tough to get legislation passed now, just imagine how difficult life will be in a Republican-dominated Congress.

Hence the new drive to present Mr Obama as a regular guy, sitting on a couch talking about his daughters with a bunch of moms. Before heading to the studio for the show’s taping on Wednesday he visited the Tastee Sub Shop in New Jersey, another high-calorie photo opp for a president once derided for his penchant for arugula (rocket).
Though I am not thrilled with the president appearing to yuk it up on day-time television, I understand his goal nonetheless. For all the haters out there who criticized him for not attending the Boy Scout anniversary ceremony, big deal. That certainly can help his poll numbers.

Preston Smith, GA GOP Attorney General Candidate, Admits to Extramarital Affair with Female Staffer

Preston Smith, Georgia GOP attorney general candidate, admits in divorce records to extramarital affair with female staffer in 2003 and 2004.

To echo Queen's famous song, another one bites the dust. Yes, another political career could come to a screeching halt. Georgia State Sen. Preston Smith, 37, who is a Republican candidate for attorney general, has admitted to an extramarital affair with a woman whom he hired to work in his Senate office in 2003 and 2004, according to transcripts of Smith’s testimony in his 2009 divorce, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The woman also worked on his Senate election campaigns.

Copies of depositions from the divorce, in which Smith discussed his infidelity, marital acrimony and the couple’s financial problems, have been sent to media outlets in recent days after Smith came in second in the race for Republican attorney general in the July 20 primary. Former Cobb County Commission Chairman Sam Olens came in first. The runoff election is set for Aug. 10. Source
Well, this revelation couldn't come at a better time for his opponent, Sam Olens, who he faces in a run-off. He said, in an e-mail to the AJC, that "I fell short in my personal life by getting a divorce and people have the right to make a moral judgment on that it they chose." Heck yes, people will make a moral judgment on that and other things in his life. How can he be trusted to be a good attorney general if he can't get basic things in his life right?

Yolanda Beck, 37 Y.O. Black Grandmother, Charged with Misdemeanor After Toddler Ingests Traces of PCP, Cocaine

Yolanda Beck, a 37-year old black grandmother, charged with one count of misdemeanor after her toddler grandson injested traces of PCP and cocaine left behind on wrappers in her Chicago home.

Yolanda Beck, a 37-year old grandmother is facing one misdemeanor count of endangering the life and health of a child, after her one-year old grandson injested traces of PCP and cocaine left behind on aluminum foil wrappers in their West Side home, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Beck has a history of drug arrests, so exactly why is she just facing one misdemeanor count? According to the Sun Times, the toddler was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital early Sunday when family members noticed he was lethargic. The doctors then determined the boy had PCP and cocaine in his system, police said. Beck reportedly admitted to smoking the drugs the same day of the incident and said she left the wrappers behind where they were easily accessible to the child. The toddler was released from the hospital on Tuesday and is in the care of a relative.

Beck was arrested at least four times for drug possession -- most recently in February and dating back to 2003 -- but was never convicted on those charges, police said. She pleaded guilty to two separate misdemeanor counts of prostitution in July 2008 and was sentenced to three months court supervision, according to court records. Beck was ordered held in lieu of $7,500 bail on the child endangerment charge on Tuesday. Source
Good parenting skills were obviously missing from Yolanda Beck's home, specifically in light of the fact that she is a grandmother at 37. Unless, of course, given her history, she may have given birth to her own child during her teenage years. I hope the judge will throw the book at this woman and keep her locked up for a long time. If she has a drug addiction, then she should have been forced into rehab. How many more offenses will this woman commit and be given a slap on the wrist by the courts? She will only graduate to more heinous offenses if she is allowed to roam the streets.

Bodies of Missing American Servicemen in Afghanistan Identified as Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove & Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley

Bodies of missing American servicemen in eastern Afghanistan found and men identified as Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley.

The Hinterland Gazette wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the families of Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley. Both sailors went missing in an extremely dangerous part of eastern Afghanistan. Jarod Newlove was recently found dead and his body recovered, according Fox News. McNeley's body was recovered earlier.

The family of Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, a 25-year-old from the Seattle area, had been notified of his death, the U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to disclose the information.

Newlove and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley went missing last Friday in Logar province. NATO recovered the body of McNeley — a 30-year-old father of two from Wheatridge, Colorado — in the area Sunday.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press in Kabul on Thursday that two days ago the Taliban left the "body of a dead American soldier for the U.S. forces" to recover. The Taliban said McNeley was killed in a firefight and insurgents had captured Newlove. Mujahid offered no explanation for Newlove's death. Source
I am wondering why the servicemen were in such a dangerous part of the country by themselves. Nonetheless it is a tragedy and it seems as though this war isn't showing any signs of ending. At least with the United States being victors.

Rose Somma Tennent: Christians Who Voted for President Barack Obama will be Held Accountable for Vote

NJ Teens, Khayri Williams-Clark, Nigel Dumas & Unidentified Teen Charged with Manslaughter in Beating Death of Immigrant Abelino Mazaniego

Three NJ teens, Khayri Williams-Clark, Nigel Dumas & unidentified male, charged with manslaughter in beating death of Salvadorean immigrant Abelino Mazaniego.

What's wrong with some of our children, why the are prone to violence? Salvadorean immigrant Abelino Mazaniego was brutally beaten on July 17, by three New Jersey teens. According to media reports, as he sat on a bench in an upscale New York suburb after finishing his restaurant shift, he was approached by a group of teenagers, including one with a cellphone camera aimed and ready for action. He later died. Khayri Williams-Clark, 18, and an unidentified 17 year old teen, both of Summit, were arrested Wednesday on manslaughter charges. Nigel Dumas, 19, of Morristown was also charged with manslaughter, according to the Burlington County Times.

According to media reports, the police said the group of teens beat Mazaniego unconscious, with the camera rolling. The video was reportedly circulated among teenagers in Summit, N.J., days after the brutal attack on the father of four. A fourth teenager believed to have videotaped the attack, but he hasn't been charged and investigators aren't releasing any information on his involvement in this heinous act.
The 17-year-old is being held in the Union County juvenile detention center, while Williams-Clark is being held at the Union County jail on $100,000 bail, prosecutors said. Bail for Dumas, at the same jail, has been set at $250,000. Authorities wouldn't say how many teens were in the group or whether there would be more charges. They also weren't discussing theories on the motive for the beating — whether it was Mazaniego's background, a thrill killing or some other reason. Source
I can picture the parents of these teenagers extolling the phantom virtues of their children, who can be considered a menace to society. I hope they try them all as adults and throw the book at them. To think that these teenagers could be so cruel as to beat this man into unconsciousness and his eventual demise, is unconscionable and shocking at the same time.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton Puts on Hold Key Provisions in Arizona Illegal Immigration Bill Many Fear will Lead to Racial Profiling

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton blocks key provisions in the controversial Arizona illegal immigration bill many fear would lead to racial profiling.

BREAKING: U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton has blocked key provisions in the controversial Arizona illegal immigration law that will take effect on Thursday. Provisions such as the requirement of police officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws has been put on hold. Further, the judge also put on hold a part of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places. These provisions have been put on hold until the courts resolve the issues.

I have never felt comfortable with people being forced to walk around with their papers. This is akin to the black South Africans being forced to carry passbooks during Apartheid. So, before all the conservatives throw this judge under a bus, you have Republican Sen. Jon Kyl to thank for recommending her to President Bill Clinton and, I might add, she was unanimously confirmed. That means many Republicans voted for along with Democrats. So, she isn't as liberal as all the critics think. CLICK HERE to read more about Judge Bolton and the judicial rulings she has made.

Rebecca Himes Allegedly Gives Birth Then Throws Newborn Out Second-Floor Window

Rebecca Himes of Reistertown, Md., reportedly gave birth to baby and threw newborn out second floor window in plastic bag like garbage.

There are some really sick people out there. Rebecca Himes, 21, allegedly threw her newborn baby out of a second floor window in her Baltimore County home. According to WBAL, Himes gave birth to the baby in the bathroom of her home, put the newborn in a plastic bag and tossed the baby out the window like garbage.

It happened Thursday in Reisterstown. A 911 caller said a baby in a bag had been found in bushes behind the home. Lt. Rob McCullough, a police spokesman, said 21-year-old Rebecca Himes, the daughter of the 911 caller, had given birth in the bathroom and thrown the infant out of the window. McCullough says the baby apparently landed in the bushes and was found by Himes' younger sister. Himes and the infant were taken to a hospital, and Himes has been released. The baby is in the custody of the Department of Social Services. Source
Himes should be behind bars right now on suspicion of attempted murder of the baby. There are so many people who would love to have a baby and this POS had one and threw the precious baby threw the window. This is one lady who should be sterilized to prevent her from ever having more children.

Is GOP Faces' Dig Against President Barack Obama Mingling with the Wealthy & Powerful at Upcoming Events About Race?

GOP Faces takes offense to President Obama's circle of wealthy friends and ritzy fundraisers, insinuating that the "black man" has overstepped his bounds.

It continues to infuriate the right wing, including elements in the Republican Party that President Obama moves in a circle of well-known people. This is particularly evident for his upcoming events, which will include hanging out with celebrities, designers, media mavens and the like. GOP Faces released a new article, "The President Wears Prada" as somehow to scold him for the company he keeps. I guess, since he is black, they expected to see him with the likes of Snoop Doggie Dog, Ice-T, Suge Knight, P. Diddy, Kanye West and perhaps Russell Simmons.

In other words, the black man has overstepped his bounds according to GOP Faces, when he hangs out with the likes of Calvin Klein, Harvey Weinstein, Bernard Schwartz, Obama booster Jane Hartley, Anne Hess, former Clinton boosters Stan Shuman and Michael Kempner, Vogue editrix Anna Wintour's home, Larry Gagosian, the art dealer who was a Clinton backer, along with Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein, and designer Calvin Klein, an Obama booster, and Marissa Mayer of Google fame. (Politico)

There's a terrible double standard that stinks here. It's okay for the spineless and classless RNC chief Michael Steele to hang out with sleazebag Andrew Breitbart after he committed one of the biggest character assassinations in recent American history of a black woman, Shirley Sherrod, who was thrown under a bus by many because of something that happened 24 years ago. Hey, what about all those high-priced events President George W. Bush attended during his first term in office? You will recall that he became toxic in the second term and Republicans ran from him like he had the cooties. Still, what about all those big shindigs that Republican supporters throw for their favored candidates? How come we haven't heard any outrage from GOP Faces?

They claim President Obama has a penchant for ritziness. So, who cares? Didn't John McCain have that same penchant too, considering his wife is wealthy and they move in certain circles? Wasn't President George W. Bush and his father used to a certain lifestyle because they were wealthy? I didn't hear any outrage then. Give me a break. This is much ado about nothing from the Party of NO.

Cash-Strapped NYC Settles Civil Suit for $7.15M in Wrongful Death of Black Man, Sean Bell, on his Wedding Day

Cash-strapped New York City settles civil suit in wrongful death of black man, Sean Bell, by police on his wedding day, to the tune of $7.15 million.

Thanks to trigger-happy cops, cash-strapped New York City will have to cough up more than $7 million to settle a wrongful death civil suit brought by Nicole Paultre Bell, fiance of Sean Bell, the unarmed black groom who was savagely gunned down by police officers on his wedding day. His estate, which is controlled by Paultre Bell, will receive $3.25 million, while his pals, who were injured in the hail of bullets, will also be compensated. Joseph Guzman, 35, who was shot 11 times in the incident, will receive $3 million and Trent Benefield, 27, will be granted $900,000, according to the NY Daily News. No monetary compensation could ever replace a loved one, but it ensure that Sean Bell's children will be able to live a good life.

The settlement, approved by a Brooklyn federal magistrate, ends a four-year legal battle by tragic would-be bride Nicole Paultre Bell and two men wounded in a 50-shot barrage that claimed her lover's life. Guzman said he is still suffering from the shooting that fueled minority concerns that cops are too quick on the draw in their neighborhoods.

"I got a metal rod in my leg. I have four bullets still in me," he said, standing in front of Brooklyn Federal Court with Paultre Bell and their lawyer Sanford Rubenstein. "I don't think a black or Hispanic man's life means much in this city. It will happen again."

Guzman and Benefield, who is black, were in a car with Bell when undercover cops opened fire on them outside the Club Kalua strip club in Queens on Nov. 25, 2006, hours before Bell was to get married. Source
What's unconscionable in this tragedy is the fact that Detectives Michael Oliver, Marc Cooper and Gescard Isnora were all acquitted in a 2008 trial of manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges stemming from the Bell shooting. The cops claim they fired on Bell's lurching car after mistakenly believing someone inside had a gun and fearing that Bell was trying to run them down. This wouldn't be the first time the NYPD has been accused of using deadly force to take the life of an innocent man. The incident in which another unarmed man, Amadou Diallo, was savagely killed by officers who were acquitted comes to mind. It will happen again and again.

Romanian Priest, Father Valentin, Under Investigation in Drowning of 6 Week-Old Baby During Baptism

Romanian priest, Father Valentin, under police investigation, in the accidental drowning death of a six-week old baby during his baptism.

Father Valentin, a priest in Moldova, is under police investigation in the accidental drowning of a six-week old baby during his baptism. According to 9 News, witnesses said the priest did not cover the baby's mouth during the ritual.

Father Valentin had denied being responsible for the baby's death during the baptism. The baby died on the way to the hospital and an autopsy reportedly found he had drowned. The baby's father, Dumitru Gaidau told Romania's Publica TV that his son was clearly in distress during the ceremony.

"He couldn't inhale, his face turned blue and he was foaming at the mouth. He [the priest] said we should not interrupt this their ritual," he said. "We couldn't believe it that he just put his hand over his belly and over the head and submerged him three times in the water." Source
This is a sad, sad case. My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents of this baby. The priest should get what's due to him. Not just a slap on the wrist but some time behind bars. If it is true that the father had informed him of the baby's discomfort, then he should have halted the baptism.

Stephen Pitcairn, Johns Hopkins Researcher, Killed by Two Black Career Criminals During a Robbery

Stephen Pitcairn, a promising young researcher at Johns Hopkins University, killed by black career criminals Lavelva Merritt & John Alexander Wagner when they robbed him of his cash and iPhone Sunday night.

From all accounts Stephen Pitcairn was on a path to change the world of stem cell research. He as a promising young researcher who had come to Baltimore from his home in Florida, after attending college in Michigan and worked with stem cells in Japan, where he was fluent in the language. At Johns Hopkins University, he assisted with breast cancer studies and was about to enroll in medical school. His life was cut short by a bunch of career criminals. According to the Baltimore Sun, he was four blocks from his apartment Sunday night when two robbers, Lavelva Merritt ( a female) and John Alexander Wagner took murdered him for cash and his iPhone. Both are career criminals with long rap sheets. This begs the question, why were they both out on the streets instead of behind bars.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Merritt, 24, has a long history of drug-related arrests and convictions, while Wagner, 34, has been charged in robberies and assaults, but never received anything more than what amounted to time served, even after violating his probation repeatedly, court records show. So a promising life was taken by two dirtbags who had nothing going for them. They are a menace to society and should have been behind bars instead on the streets terrorizing innocent people. According to the Baltimore Sun, in charging documents, police said they were told by witnesses that Merritt and Wagner were overheard saying that they had "robbed and 'hurt' a 'white boy.'" Further, during an interview with homicide detectives, Merritt reportedly said she and Wagner were out "hunting to rob someone."

Wagner's most recent arrest occurred in late April, when police used surveillance cameras to locate Wagner and a man who said Wagner had put him in a headlock and taken his belongings. The victim pointed out Wagner, who he said had first asked him if he was "BGF" — a member of the Black Guerilla Family gang — or "J," a reference to Jamaa, a Swahili word meaning "family" that is used by BGF members.

Prosecutors dropped the charge on May 18. On a form documenting the decision to place the case on the "inactive docket," prosecutors checked boxes indicating the victim did not appear and "gave statements inconsistent with evidence or otherwise lacks credibility." Source
Once again, the justice system has failed the citizens of Baltimore and Stephen Pitcairn and his family. There is no reason why either one of these dirtbags should have been out on the streets. The prosecutors dropped the ball repeatedly in the case of John Alexander Wagner.

PA Governor Ed Rendell Says President Barack Obama Decision to go on "The View" Wrong

Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA) says President Barack Obama's decision to go on "The View" is wrong and says "there has to be a little bit of dignity to the presidency."

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, one of President Obama's staunchest allies and Pat Buchanan, who I have long considered as someone who harbors racists views, both agree that President Obama shouldn't go on "The View" Thursday.

Rendell:  I think there's got to be a little bit of dignity to the presidency.

Mika Brzezinski: What are you saying, Ed?

Willie Geist: What a horrible insult to "The View."

Rendell:  I think there are some shows. I wouldn't  put him on "Jerry Springer," too, right?....I think the president of the United States has to go on serious shows. And "The View" is, you can make a case that it's a serious show, but it also rocks and rolls a little bit. I'm not sure he has to go on "The View" to be open to questions. Source: TV Newser
I suppose Jay Leno and David Letterman are far more serious venues for President Obama and VP Joe Biden to answer questions. Of course, I am being sarcastic.

Congressional Black Caucus Coddles Disgraced Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Says not to Rush to Judgement

Congressional Black Caucus coddles disgraced Rep. Charlie Rangel after ethics violations charges, comparing to Andrew Breitbart hatchet job against former black USDA director Shirley Sherrod.

How fair is it that the Congressional Black Caucus is coddling disgraced Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) after has was found guilty of a litany of ethics violations. The leader of the Caucus, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) warned fellow Democrats on Monday against rushing to judgement and pressuring Rangel to admit ethical misdeeds. She further stated that members of both parties should not presume Rangel's guilt, but her message was aimed at Democrats who may want Rangel to admit to the allegations against him to avoid an election-season ethics trial. What that means is that the Democrats will wimp-out as usual and not stand on principles, but will allow someone who has violated his office so many times to keep his job. Well, I hope the people of Harlem, NY will send Charlie Rangel a message loud and clear that they have had enough of his dishonesty and his gaming the system to line his pockets.

As for the 42-member Congressional Black Caucus, they don't play fair and have given the impression on more than one occasion of being on the wrong side of reason for the sake of race. They will hold the Democrats hostage by threatening to block legislative initiatives if action is taken against Charlie Rangel. So much for a democracy and looking out for We, the People. From the onset, the CBC has sought to use the Shirley Sherrod controversy to their advantage in a disgraceful way. On Friday, CBC member, Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) compared a so-called rush to judgment on Rangel with the Democrats' embarrassment over the forced resignation of USDA director Shirley Sherrod after conservative sleaze-bag Andrew Breitbart fed an edited video twisting Sherrod's words to the media. Er, it is hardly comparable. In light of the fact that Shirley Sherrod could never have faced a similar fate as Charlie Rangel.

You will recall that a House investigation panel last week announced that it was charging Charlie Rangel with unspecified violations of standards of conduct. The charges will be publicly read Thursday at the first proceeding of a separate panel of four Democrats and four Republicans. The panel of eight will judge whether the allegations can be proved by clear and convincing evidence.

Charlie Rangel has represented Harlem for about 40 years and it is time for someone else to take his place. It is time we realized that having an elected official serve in office for so long is counterproductive and a great disservice to their constituents. This isn't the first time Charlie Rangel's name has surfaced in the midst of a scandal of sorts in New York. He was accused of owning four rent stabilized apartments, though he had the financial means to own four apartments free from stabilization. He claimed during a press conference that it was none of New York City's business where he lived. Well, it is New York City's business whether or not he will be reelected for another term. It is New York City's business whether he is representing them to the best of his ability.

To that end, Charlie Rangel will be challenged for the 15th-District seat and rightly so. Among his challengers is State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, whose father held the seat before Rangel defeated him on 1970. Though Powell, who tried to unseat Rangel in 1994, has had his own share of problems. He was recently found guilty of driving while impaired. Still that incident isn't enough to dash Powell's chances of challenging Rangel in the elections. It is time for the people of Harlem to say enough is enough, whether the Congressional Black Caucus agrees or not.

Correction: We incorrectly named Barbara Boxer as the head of the Congressional Black Caucus instead of Barbara Lee.

Joel Pollak, GOP Illinois Congressional Candidate Compares Himself to Black Anti-Apartheid Martyr Stephen Biko

Joel Pollak, Illinois Republican Congressional candidate, compares himself to black anti-Apartheid martyr Stephen Bantu Biko after his opponent criticism.

Joel Pollak, who is running against Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) on the Republican ticket, has compared himself to anti-Apartheid martyr Stephen Bantu Biko, on sleaze bag Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website. He said, "like Stephen Biko, he writes what he likes." He wrote this lengthy screed after Schakowsky criticized him for writing for Breitbart's propaganda machine. Well, for starters, Joel Pollak is deluding himself if he thinks he is somehow comparable to Stephen Biko, who gave his life for equal rights and justice for South Africans. I hardly expect Joel Pollak to fight for the rights of Main Street.

For those of you who don't know who Stephen Biko really is. Let me enlighten you and you will see how laughable it is for Joel Pollak to compare himself to the late Mr. Biko:

Steve Biko was one of South Africa's most significant political activists and a leading founder of South Africa's Black Consciousness Movement. His death in police detention in 1977 led to his being hailed as a martyr of the anti-Apartheid struggle....

Steve Biko was one of South Africa's most significant political activists and a leading founder of South Africa's Black Consciousness Movement. His death in police detention in 1977 led to his being hailed as a martyr of the anti-Apartheid struggle.....

In 1973 Steve Biko was 'banned' by the Apartheid government. Under the 'ban' Biko was restricted to his home town of Kings William's Town in the Eastern Cape – he could no longer support the BCP in Durban, but was able to continue working for the BPC – he helped set up the Zimele Trust Fund which assisted political prisoners and their families. (Biko was elected Honorary President of the BPC in January 1977.)

Biko was detained and interrogated four times between August 1975 and September 1977 under Apartheid era anti-terrorism legislation. On 21 August 1977 Biko was detained by the Eastern Cape security police and held in Port Elizabeth. From the Walmer police cells he was taken for interrogation at the security police headquarters. On 7 September "Biko sustained a head injury during interrogation, after which he acted strangely and was uncooperative. The doctors who examined him (naked, lying on a mat and manacled to a metal grille) initially disregarded overt signs of neurological injury."

By 11 September Biko had slipped into a continual, semi-conscious state and the police physician recommended a transfer to hospital. Biko was, however, transported 1,200 km to Pretoria – a 12-hour journey which he made lying naked in the back of a Land Rover. A few hours later, on 12 September, alone and still naked, lying on the floor of a cell in the Pretoria Central Prison, Biko died from brain damage. Source: About.com
Now, do you really think Joel Pollak is comparable to Stephen Biko in any way? He literally gave his life for his country. What has Mr. Pollak done that compares to this martyr? NOTHING!

After Smearing Former Black USDA Director Shirley Sherrod Andrew Breitbart Invited to Private GOP Fundraiser with Michael Steele

Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart invited to GOP fundraiser with RNC chief Michael Steele despite sparking controversy with edited video smearing former black USDA director Shirley Sherrod.

True to form, the Republican National Committee has invited sleazebag conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart to participate in a private GOP fundraiser on August 12, 2010, with Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele. Excuse me for thinking Michael Steele had an ounce of decency in his body, considering Andrew Breitbart and Fox News smeared former black USDA director Shirley Sherrod last week over comments she made about an incident that happened 24 years ago. Suffice to say, the GOP welcomed Sens. Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms with open arms though they had a racist past. So, racial injustice means nothing to the Republican Party, especially Michael Steele. Far be it for me to expect him to decry Andrew Breitbart for his deliberate smear campaign against Shirley Sherrod.

Tickets to the donor retreat in Beverly Hills, Calif., start at $1,000 and go up to $60,800 for a couple. Steele and Breitbart are listed as confirmed guests to the August 12 event to update donors on the RNC's plans for the midterm elections. Talking Points Memo first reported the invitation on Monday and it was later confirmed by Republicans. The RNC declined to discuss the event. Source: Fox News
This is typical of the GOP. They are always on the wrong side of reason and will not stand up to the racist elements within their midst. This is shameful. Imagine if President Barack Obama had invited Rev. Jeremiah Wright to a Democratic fundraiser. All hell would break loose.

Fox News Brit Hume Says, "As Victims of Unfair Media Treatment go, Shirley Sherrod got off Easy"

Fox News Brit Hume says former USDA director Shirley Sherrod got off easy for comments made 24 years ago about her reluctance to help a white farmer.

Fox News is at it again. Continuing its modern-day lynching of Shirley Sherrod. Brit Hume, who makes me drowsy just listening to him yak on and on, said Mrs. Sherrod got off easy. Wow, is that the same pass given to the late Senator Robert Byrd, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and the late Sens. Jesse Helms & Strom Thurmond? Wait, is this the same slap on the wrist given to liar and smearer Andrew Breitbart? Give me a break. The reality is Fox News meant to impugn the character of Shirley Sherrod. Their true colors continue to show daily.

SALT: Action Figure? Angelina Jolie Played Her Role Convincingly

SALT: New Action Figure?

This past weekend, my family and I decided to go and see Angelina Jolie's new movie: SALT. I must say it lived up to its hype. We were quite thrilled and enthralled at the movie's plots and sub plots. The storyline kept you guessing and moved in an efficient manner. I couldn't help but wonder though at the timeliness of the film's release. Here we are in an age of spies being outed, and a film about a Russian spy ring is released. Could this be coincidence? Or just superb timing by Hollywood?

Whatever the case it is a movie worth watching. The action was fast paced and the heroine SALT (Angelina Jolie) was daring and admirable at the same time. Without giving it away, let's just say that she arrived in the nick of time to save the world. It reminds me of her first major movie : Laura Croft, Tomb Raider. We thouroughly enjoyed the movie and are anticipating a sequel in the works. I would put my money on the fact that an action figure named SALT is in the works.

Jim Quinn Says Civil Rights Movement Has Become "an Industry of Grievance & Looting"

Conservative radio show host Jim Quinn says civil rights movement has "become an industry of grievance and looting.

Here's another reason why we can't have an intelligent discussion about race in this country. Not when we have idiots like Jim Quinn of the "War Room with Quinn & Rose." He said the "civil rights movement has become an industry of grievance and looting." As opposed to the racist elements in the right wing and those who coddled Strom Thurmond & Jesse Helms, plus those who are now coddling Sen. Jeff Sessions. Here's my position in a nutshell. If these racist people think they are dealing with the same blacks from the 1960s, then they are sadly mistaken. We are more technologically savvy and educated today. We'll fight fire with fire. What about the looting we suffered at the hands of a white establishment for decades? Give me a break. The struggles of blacks in this country for racial equality has been reduced to a mockery by an idiot.

Conservative Radio Host Mark Levin Calls Shirley Sherrod a "Racebaiter & an Idiot"

Conservative nutjob Mark Levin says former USDA official Shirley Sherrod is "not only a race-baiter and an idiot."

The right wing is still lynching former USDA official Shirley Sherrod. Conservative radio show host Mark Levin has called Mrs. Sherrod a "race-baiter" and an "idiot." Wow, this is coming from a full-blown idiot who thinks everyone is out to get him. As long as I have breath, I will continue to speak out in Mrs. Sherrod's defense. She was wronged on so many levels. The reality is Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham could never dare walk in the shoes of this woman.

UN: Domestic Violence Claims Life of One Woman Every Six Hours in South Africa

UN: Violence against women claims one life every six hours in South Africa and is a problem of pandemic proportions.

I came across some shocking statistics from the United Nations about violence against women. Here's an excerpt:
Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. Based on country data available, up to 70 per cent of women experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime – the majority by husbands, intimate partners or someone they know.

Among women aged between 15 and 44, acts of violence cause more death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined. Perhaps the most pervasive human rights violation that we know today, violence against women devastates lives, fractures communities, and stalls development. It takes many forms and occurs in many places – domestic violence in the home, sexual abuse of girls in schools, sexual harassment at work, rape by husbands or strangers, in refugee camps or as a tactic of war.
PDF - Say NO Factsheet

Femicide ─ the murder of women because they are women
  • In the United States, one-third of women murdered each year are killed by intimate partners.
  • In South Africa, a woman is killed every 6 hours by an intimate partner.
  • In India, 22 women were killed each day in dowry-related murders in 2007.
  • In Guatemala, two women are murdered, on average, each day.
Those statistics are staggering and cause for concern. Domestic violence is a silent killer. Many times the victim is too afraid to seek help or tell someone what is going on in the home. Love doesn't hurt and it is a tragedy that so many men are content with inflicting such anguish and pain on their partners.

Jamie Harris & Kevin Phillip, Black Drexel University Basketball Players Wanted on a Litany of Charges Including Robbery

Jamie Harris & Kevin Phillip, two black Drexel University basketball players, now fugitives, face a litany of charges including robbery.

Jamie Harris and Kevin Phillip, two Drexel University basketball players are wanted for robbery. According to the Daily News, the two cohorts stormed into a female Drexel student's apartment Wednesday night brandishing guns, expecting to score a big stash of cash, the police said. One problem. The woman had no money, so Harris and Phillip, who are black, grabbed her iPhone instead and ran, the police said. Thankfully, there is a video tape of their getaway.

Both men are now fugitives and wanted on a litany of charges including robbery, theft and conspiracy, Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said, according to the Daily News. Both men are considered armed and dangerous.

Even though a person is innocent until proven guilty, the video tape may seal their doom. What I find incredulous is that these two young men have a chance to create a good life for themselves through education and hard work, but somehow they thought they could rob this woman and get away with it. Now one has to wonder, how many times have they done this before?

UPDATE#1 (7:07 p.m. EST): Jamie Harris & Kevin Phillip, who are on a full scholarship at Drexel have surrendered. A third person, Devon Bond, who played a role in the planning of this hair-brain robbery, has also surrendered. These two young men will most definitely lose their scholarships and they may even be expelled from the university, as they should, if they are found guilty by a jury.

Jennifer Keeton Files Federal Lawsuit Against Augusta State Univ. over Her Anti-Gay Views

Jennifer Keeton, an Augusta State University files federal lawsuit against the school for violating her rights over her anti-homosexual views.

Jennifer Keeton, a graduate student in counseling at Augusta State University, has filed a lawsuit against the school in federal court alleging that her constitutional rights were violated when the school demanded she work to change her views opposing homosexuality. Personally, I believe she is free to hold any belief she chooses but I don't blame the school for its actions. She would be a counselor in a setting in which she may come across someone who is a homosexual. How would she offer counseling to that person? When she applied for admission to the school, she was accepted, not because of her views but because of her credentials. The school isn't in the business of graduating people who won't be able to carry out all it has imparted to them because of their beliefs. The university is a public institution and cannot discriminate against one because of their sexual orientation. Ms. Keeton should either find another school that caters to her views or deal with it.

In a lawsuit filed last week in the U.S. District Court in Augusta, Ga., the student, Jennifer Keeton, alleges that faculty members and administrators at the university have violated her First Amendment rights to free speech and the free exercise of religion by threatening her with expulsion if she does not fufill requirements contained in a remediation plan intended to get her to change her beliefs. Here's an excerpt from the press release by the Alliance Defense Fund, which is representing Jennifer Keeton in the lawsuit:

Augusta State ordered Keeton to undergo a re-education plan, in which she must attend “diversity sensitivity training,” complete additional remedial reading, and write papers to describe their impact on her beliefs. If she does not change her beliefs or agree to the plan, the university says it will expel her from the Counselor Education Program.

“A public university student shouldn’t be threatened with expulsion for being a Christian and refusing to publicly renounce her faith, but that’s exactly what’s happening here. Simply put, the university is imposing thought reform,” said ADF Senior Counsel David French. “Abandoning one’s own religious beliefs should not be a precondition at a public university for obtaining a degree. This type of leftist zero-tolerance policy is in place at far too many universities, and it must stop. Jennifer’s only crime was to have the beliefs that she does.”

Keeton, 24, is pursuing her master’s degree in counseling at Augusta State. After her professors learned of her biblical beliefs, specifically her views on homosexual conduct, from both classroom discussions and private conversations with other students, the school imposed the re-education plan. Keeton never denigrated anyone in communicating her beliefs but merely stated factually what they were in appropriate contexts.
To read the lawsuit, CLICK HERE. The question is how far will we go to force someone to share our views? Do you think Jennifer Keeton's rights were violated by the school?

UPDATE#1: From Fox News, A federal judge has ruled in favor of a public university that removed a Christian student from its graduate program in school counseling over her belief that homosexuality is morally wrong. Monday's ruling, according to Julea Ward's attorneys, could result in Christian students across the country being expelled from public university, Eastern Michigan University in this case, for similar views.

Town of Combine, TX, Fires 11 Out of 13 Police Officers Due to Budget Woes, Reorganization

Town of Combine, TX, fires 11 out of 13 police officers due to a reorganization and budgetary woes.

SHOCK: The town of Combine, Texas, has fired 11 out of 13 police officers during a council meeting last Saturday. The vote was 5-0 and the council cited a department reorganization and lack of funds. Gee, I wonder what other city services they cut first, before firing nearly all their police officers.

What's equally crazy is that the Mayor pro tem, Tonya Ratcliff, could not provide specific details on how much money the city would save by cutting the police department so drastically. If I were the other two officers, I would also quit and let the city council protect the residents of Combine. It also seems like Ms. Ratcliff had problems explaining why the cuts were made.

“The town needs a police department that they can depend on and trust, and that’s what were working towards,” Ratcliff told reporters after the meeting. “So, you said the officers did nothing wrong, but now you're saying they are someone you can not trust?” one reporter asked. “No,” Ratcliff responded, “there is two different sets of police officers that we are talking about." “So the ones that were let go you said they didn’t do anything wrong,” the reporter continued. Ratcliff remarked quickly, “I said the reserve force. Thank you, that’s all I have.” She abruptly ended the question and answer session and walked away from the reporters. Source: NBC News
So, now the Kaufman County Sheriff's police Office will now patrol the city and Combine is currently searching for a police chief.

NYPD Believe Leisha Jones Possible Perpetrator in Fiery Murder-Suicide that Claimed the Lives of Four Children

NYPD believe Leisha Jones possible perpetrator in horrific fiery murder-suicide at her Staten Island home that claimed the lives of four children, one adult.

The New York Police now believe Leisha Jones, a Jamaican national, was the possible culprit in the murder-suicide fire at her Staten Island home that wiped out her family. The police said they believe the badly charred note and diary found in the wreckage of the fire were written by the same person, Leisha Jones and not her 14 year-old-son, according to the NY Daily News. Though the detectives have not made a "final determination" about who is responsible. The deceased include Melonie Jones, 7, Jermaine Sinclair, 2, Brittney Jones, 10, C.J. Jones, 14 and their mother, Leisha Jones.

Investigators initially thought Jones' oldest child, C.J. Jones, had slashed his two younger siblings' throats Thursday before setting the Port Richmond house ablaze and cutting his own throat. The mom and a 2-year-old son also died in the blaze. C.J.'s father told The News on Sunday that pressure on the teen to help raise his siblings created friction between him and his mom before the tragedy.

Earlston Raymond, who lives in Jamaica, said his son was overwhelmed by the responsibility of raising his three younger siblings and wanted to join him - but his mother refused. "Leisha never wanted to send back C.J.," Raymond said by phone yesterday."I know C.J. wasn't the one to kill himself and kill his brother and sisters." Leisha Jones' family refused to believe she played a role in her family's death. Source: NY Daily News
No matter who the perpetrator is, this was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred. I am left shaking my head and wondering why the murderer didn't take his/her life only and left the children unharmed.

Harry S. Truman Bucks Racist Sentiment & Issues Executive Order for Desegregation of US Armed Forces July 26, 1948

It is ironic that on July 26, 1948, President Harry Truman issues executive order for the desegregation of the US Armed Forces, but today we are still grappling with institutional racism of the black community on some level.

On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 desegregating the United States Armed Forces. President Truman's move was seen as very controversial at the time, but he did the right thing. It is interesting to note that Think Progress' Igor Volsky uncovered the polls conducted of military personnel showing overwhelming opposition to desegregation. Further, according to Think Progress, a Gallup Poll in March of 1948 showed 63% thought that black troops and white troops should remain separated, with 26% of the mindset that they should live and work together.

1. It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. This policy shall be put into effect as rapidly as possible, having due regard to the time required to effectuate any necessary changes without impairing efficiency or morale.

2. There shall be created in the National Military Establishment an advisory committee to be known as the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services, which shall be composed of seven members to be designated by the President.

3. The Committee is authorized on behalf of the President to examine into the rules, procedures and practices of the Armed Services in order to determine in what respect such rules, procedures and practices may be altered or improved with a view to carrying out the policy of this order. The Committee shall confer and advise the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Army, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Secretary of the Air Force, and shall make such recommendations to the President and to said Secretaries as in the judgment of the Committee will effectuate the policy hereof.
President Harry Truman took decisive action to do what is right and he was not swayed by the fact he could lose the upcoming election at that time. He was also not swayed by public opinion. He did the right thing despite all racist sentiments around him. I cannot close this brief commentary without referencing the late civil rights icon Dorothy Height's comments about Truman's actions. In Michael R. Gardner's book, "Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks," she said: "Harry Truman's integration of the armed services represented the most significant institutional advance for the civil rights of black Americans since President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation." It is ironic that on a day that literally changed the course of history of the Armed Forces, we are grappling with the modern-day lynching of black former USDA official Shirley Sherrod and the outpouring of racist sentiment found in the comments of fans of Andrew Breitbart's websites -- Big Government, Breitbart, Big Journalism. It is also ironic that President Obama refuses to sign an executive order repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to enable gays and lesbians to openly serve in the military.

Pew Research Finds Little In-Depth Coverage of Race Issues Prior to Forced Resignation of Black USDA Official

Pew Research finds little in-depth coverage of race issues in America prior to controversy around forced resignation of black former USDA official Shirley Sherrod.

The Pew Research Center has released a new report that has discovered that we aren't talking about race as we should and the in-depth coverage is scant. Here's the press release:

The fallout from the firing of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod and the one-year anniversary of the controversial arrest of African American Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. have put race back in the news of late. These high-profile stories raise a larger question: to what degree does the press cover news about the state of black America generally?

In the last year, African Americans as a group generated relatively little attention in the mainstream press—and what coverage there was focused more on specific events instead of on broader issues about race, according to a Pew Research Center study that investigated media coverage of African Americans during the first year of the Obama presidency.

The report examined more than 67,000 mainstream news stories from February 2009 through February 2010 and found that just 643 of those stories (1.9% of the newshole studied) related in a significant way to African Americans in the U.S. While relatively small, this was more coverage than was given to Hispanics (1.3%) and Asian Americans (.2%) in the same time frame.

The biggest story involving African Americans in the time period under study was the Gates incident. That story accounted for nearly four times more African American coverage than did either of the two biggest national “issue” stories—the economy and health care.

The nation’s first black president was the second-biggest story in the coverage explicitly related to African Americans in the last year. In all, nearly 18% of coverage of African Americans came through attention to the Obama Administration.

Among the key findings: Nearly a third of the coverage of Africans Americans was related in some way to President Obama. Obama made himself a central player in the Gates incident when, at a presidential press conference, he described the arrest as “stupid.” Soon thereafter the president hosted a “beer summit” at the White House with his friend Gates and the arresting officer in an effort to smooth things over.

Coverage of Obama’s involvement in the Gates controversy combined with coverage of the Obama Administration more generally accounted for almost 30% of all African American coverage during the year studied. About 9% the coverage of the Obama presidency had a substantial racial element to it.

Most of that coverage, too, was tied to specific incidents rather than broader issues, in particular Rep. Joe Wilson shouting “You Lie!” during a Presidential speech and Senator Harry Reid’s apology for comments he made about Obama’s skin color. In order to be coded as having a racial angle, at least 25% of the content of a story must deal with the topic of race or with a specific racial group. Black newsmakers drove the coverage of African Americans.

The press coverage that did emerge in the time frame studied tended to be a reaction to events involving black newsmakers rather than to issues relating to African Americans more generally. The arrest of Gates, the Obama presidency, the death of Michael Jackson and the attempted Northwest Airlines terrorist attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab accounted for nearly half (46%) of all coverage that had a substantial mention of African Americans during this time period.

Cable, talk shows mentioned African Americans most. The media sectors studied differed in the degree to which they focused on African Americans in their coverage over the course of the year and in the angles they pursued. Cable TV and talk radio came in at the top, with 2.5% and 2.4%, respectively, of time studied on their programs containing significant mention of African Americans. The bulk of this time was spent assessing political implications of actions by or to black figures. African American press focused more on issues than incidents.

A separate analysis of three African American newspapers reveals a very different approach to the coverage of the Gates incident. While the mainstream media largely assessed political implications for President Obama, the commentary in the black press considered the arrest itself and the broader question of race relations in the U.S.

These are some of the findings of a study that examined coverage of African Americans in the press from February 16, 2009, through February 15, 2010, in different mainstream media outlets including newspapers, cable and network television, radio and news websites.

The study also included a separate analysis of how the Gates controversy was treated in the three highest circulation African American newspapers in the country—The New York Amsterdam News, The Afro-American and the Philadelphia Tribune. This study was designed and produced by jointly by The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism and its Social and Demographic Trends Project. The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan and nonpolitical fact tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. Source: Baltimore Sun
If the media sought to focus on race in a productive way, such as performing in-depth studies, the dialogue wouldn't be so frenetic pitting blacks against whites. There are other stories similar to Shirley Sherrod across this country and these victims remain faceless because the media chooses to ignore.

Alexander Marlow, Breitbart's Big Government Blogger, Spreads More Lies, Says Shirley Sherrod Silenced by Media

Alexander Marlow, a blogger for Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website smears former black USDA official Shirley Sherrod again by saying she didn't make media rounds on Sunday because she was silenced.

More smear coming the Andrew Breitbart camp. This time, he couldn't bring himself to smear former USDA official Shirley Sherrod. He sent an idiot named Alexander Marlow to do it. Marlowe claims Shirley Sherrod has been silenced by the media. Er, newsflash. Shirley Sherrod lives in Georgia where religion plays a big role in one's life, therefore, chances are she was in church today. Not defeated and kicked to the curb as Alexander Marlowe would have his readers believe.

She was likened to a modern day Rosa Parks or Nelson Mandela, but former the Ag official, according to the Washington Post, was not interviewed on a single major Sunday morning talk-show following a week that can only be described as a Shirley Sherrod media frenzy. Though the conversation on Sunday morning focused on race in America, noticeably absent from the discussion was the woman behind the controversy. Earlier this week a handful of people in the blogosphere began to speculate Sherrod would pull off a “full Ginsburg,” or become only the thirteenth person to appear on all major Sunday talk-shows on the same day since the feat was first accomplished by William H. Ginsburg in 1998. However, this was before a clip of Sherrod suggesting Andrew Breitbart wants blacks “stuck back in the times of slavery” went viral. Sherrod also drew extensive criticism late in the week for blasting Fox News as racist.
This is too funny, but draw your own conclusions. This is typical muck from sleazebag Andrew Breitbart. If you are sick of this continued character assassination of Shirley Sherrod, join Facebook group, "Stop Andrew Breitbart Now" and let your voice be heard.

Modern-Day Lynching of Former Black USDA Official Shirley Sherrod, Comparable to Tom Robinson's Trial in "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Modern-day lynching of Shirley Sherrod by Andrew Breitbart comparable to accusations leveled against Tom Robinson, black man, in Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" by white woman.

It is ironic that the modern-day lynching of former USDA official Shirley Sherrod occurred during the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," in which an innocent black man was charged with a crime he did not commit. The presumption made by many in the media about Shirley Sherrod was that she was guilty of racism before she was even given due process. Sounds a lot like what happened  to Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape by a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Many of the citizens of the fictional town of Maycomb, Ala. disapproved of Atticus Finch representing a black man. His children Jem and Scout were taunted by other children because their father took a stand against racism by representing a black man, who was later killed under after trying to escape from prison because he knew he would never get the justice he was due. During the trial of Tom Robinson, it was painfully obvious that Mayella Ewell and her father Bob were lying, but they were believed and the black man was denied the justice he was due. That sounds a lot like the Deep South Shirley Sherrod knew and experienced on a daily basis during the 1960s, that even included the murder of her father by a white man, who was never tried for his unspeakable act of racism.

I will echo Frank Rich's op-ed article in the New York Times. Mark Williams, former leader of the Tea Party Express, had hurled racial insults for months, leading to the NAACP passing a resolution condemning the racist elements of the Tea Party movement. A move I disagreed with in principle, because the organization chose to ignore the racist venom being spewed by the New Black Panther movement.  Mark Williams appealed to the fringe elements of a movement that is in a position to effect great change in America. I will not condemn the entire Tea Party movement and I applaud the Tea Party Federation for removing Mark Williams from his leadership role. The greater issue that comes from the Tea Party movement is that conservative blogger, Andrew Breitbart, who has had a history of engaging in smear campaigns against those who don't share his political views, took it upon himself to try to show the world the "racism" in the NAACP. He made this move immediately after Mark Williams were forced out of the Tea Party movement.

Once Williams was disowned by other Tea Partiers, Breitbart posted the bogus Sherrod video as revenge under the headline “Video Proof: The NAACP Awards Racism.” To portray whites as the victims of racist blacks has been a weapon of the right from the moment desegregation started to empower previously subjugated minorities in the 1960s. But its deployment has accelerated with the ascent of a black president. The pace is set by right-wing stars like Glenn Beck, who on Fox branded Barack Obama a racist with “a deep-seated hatred for white people,” and the ever-opportunistic Newt Gingrich, who on Twitter maligned Sonia Sotomayor as a “Latina woman racist.”

Even the civil rights hero John Lewis has been slimed by these vigilantes. Lewis was nearly beaten to death by state troopers bearing nightsticks and whips in Selma, Ala., just three weeks before Sherrod’s father was murdered 200 miles away in 1965. This year, as a member of Congress, he was pelted with racial epithets while walking past protesters on the Capitol grounds during the final weekend of the health care debate. Breitbart charged Lewis with lying — never mind that the melee had hundreds of eyewitnesses — and tried to prove it with a video so manifestly bogus that even Fox didn’t push it. But he wasn’t deterred then, and he and others like him won’t be deterred by the Sherrod saga’s “happy ending” as long as the McConnells of the conservative establishment look the other way and Fox pumps racial rage into the media bloodstream 24/7. I have gotten into a Twitter fight with Andrew Breitbart a few months ago over the issue of John Lewis and his bare-faced twisting of the facts that John Lewis was, in fact, called a n**ger. Once again, he tried to smear the reputation of a man, who gave his life to fighting for civil rights of others because of his own experiences and journey in the United States. Had it not been for the white farmer, Roger Spooner and his wife Eloise, coming forward to defend Shirley Sherrod, the accusations may have stuck and she would have been the Tom Robinson of 2010. We need to confront race issues head-on so that hustlers like Andrew Breitbart won't be in a position to hijack the news with lies and smear tactics. What happened to the country that elected its first black president in 2008? It is also ironic that the black farmers, along with Shirley Sherrod, who prevailed in a lawsuit against the USDA, have yet to see a penny from that $1.25 billion settlement. The Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are pointing fingers as to when the money will be paid. Once again, blacks are being victimized by the system that comes to them during campaigns leading up to elections for their votes.

Mega-Church Pastors T. D. Jakes & Joel Osteen Form Unlikely Partnership

Mega-church pastors T. D. Jakes and Joel Osteen have formed a new partnership of sorts. According to ABC affiliate, KTRK-TV, Jakes called Osteen to see if he could get Lakewood, Osteen's church, to host a men's conference. So, a quick tour of the church led to an all-day session between the two men. They reportedly discovered they had a lot in common -- mega-church pastors, preached to millions more on television, made millions outside the pulpit from best-selling books and in Jakes' case, also from movies. Osteen invited Jakes to preach at this church.

Why is this newsworthy? Well, some have said both men are running out of ideas, so this new bond would bring in more money into their coffers, considering that the country is in a recession and funds are tight.

"I think that this is a new model, because whether people want to admit it or not, there's often a lot of jealousy in the ministry among clergy and I think it's a wonderful indication when a ministry like Lakewood and Pastor Osteen can come together with Potter's House TD Jakes without regard to race and theology and anything else and just worship God as his sons," said Jakes. I, for one, don't ascribe to the brand of gospel being preached by either man, especially Joel Osteen. He rarely bases his sermons on Bible verses. He just talks and talks. Hey, I am going to the church for spiritual direction, not to hear him talk in general terms. I want concrete applications of every day issues to Biblical truth. T. D. Jakes, on the other hand, has been criticized for his opulent lifestyle and simply preaching the gospel of prosperity. That is an unrealistic way to win souls for Christ. Not everyone will be financially well-off in life. You will always have rich and poor. No amount of twisting the words of the Bible will ever change that.

Last year, Steve Lawson rebuked Joel Osteen, when Osteen was asked on the Larry King show, about going to heaven.  King stated, echoing his words of you either believe in Christ or you don't. If you believe in Christ you are going to heaven. If you don't, no matter what you do in life, you won't go to heaven. Osteen said he didn't know if those words were true. What happens if one is a Jew or Muslim? Where do you go? He said he is very careful about saying who will go or not to heaven. In other words, he flip-flopped.

Howard Dean Says Fox News "Racist" in Handling of Controversy Surrounding Shirley Sherrod

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean says Fox News is "racist" in its handling of the controversy surrounding former USDA official Shirley Sherrod and the deliberate smear by Andrew Breitbart.

Howard Dean, former Vermont governor & former head of the Democratic National Committee, lit into Fox News Sunday during his appearance "Fox News Sunday" with Chris Wallace. He accused the network of racism in its handling of the Shirley Sherrod controversy. He asserted Fox News failed to vet the video fed to them by right wing conservative sleazebag Andrew Breitbart that twisted Mrs. Sherrod words about helping a white farmer.

“I don’t think Newt Gingrich is a racist, and I don’t think you’re a racist,” Dean told Fox News host Chris Wallace, “but Fox News did something that was absolutely racist. They took a – they had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. They had been pushing a theme of black racism with this phony Black Panther crap and this business and this Sotomayor and all this other stuff.”

When Wallace interrupted Dean to point out that Fox did not air the excerpted Sherrod footage until after the Obama administration had fired her based on it (the excerpts were featured on Fox News’s website prior to her firing), Dean shot back “It was about to go on Glenn Beck, which is what the administration was afraid of.”

And Dean mildly rebuked the Obama administration, as well, saying, “We’ve got to stop being afraid of Glenn Beck (a Fox News host) and the racist fringe of the Republican Party. But Fox News was not blameless during this. You played it up.” Dean dismissed Wallace’s point about timing, asserting “you didn’t do your job,” and charging that Fox News has helped the Republican Party foster racism by focusing on allegations of reverse racism. Source: Politico
Fox News continues to appeal to the racist fringe elements of the Tea Party and Republican Party. The network continues to push racism and is counterproductive to this country moving forward. Shep Smith and Geraldo Rivera are the only two hosts on Fox News that have been truly "fair and balanced" in their reporting of the news. The others, such as Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Steve Doocy, Greta Van Sustern, continue to push the issue of racism, subtly. In essence, once you are black or Latino, and something goes wrong, the presumption is you are guilty and the denial of due process is a non-issue.

Is Karen Handel, Possible GOP Gubernatorial Candidate, the Best Choice for Blacks, Latinos & the GLBT Communities in Georgia?

Can possible GOP gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel best represent blacks, Latinos and the GLBT communities in Georgia?

As a resident of the Peach state, Georgia, I have been following the campaigns Republican gubernatorial candidates Karen Handel and Nathan Deal, with the question always in the forefront of my mind, what will either candidate mean for the black community? Both candidates will face each other in a runoff on August 10. Karen Handel, whose campaign saw a huge surge with voters after former Alaska governor Sarah Palin endorsed her, considers herself as a fiscal conservative, while Nathan Deal, who secured the endorsement of Newt Gingrich, bills himself as a "true conservative" candidate, which infers he holds strong views on gay rights, abortion and immigration, which may work against him for proponents of each hot button issue. In all honesty, Newt Gingrich's endorsement means more to me than one from Sarah 'Quitter' Palin, though I realize that she is very popular for unknown reasons. It is interesting to note that Karen Handel also got the endorsement of Arizona governor Jan Brewer, whose state passed legislation cracking down on illegal immigration, which has been the subject of widespread outcry over the strong possibility of racial profiling. If similar legislation is introduced, it will lead to many blacks and Latinos viewing her campaign and her would-be administration warily. After all, an illegal immigration bill similar to that of Arizona is bound to come to Georgia, as Ms. Handel has alluded. It's just a matter of time.

Karen Handel prides herself as having saved Georgians $100 million, cutting budgets by 17% and passed the "toughest ethics laws in the country," which I must add, led to the dismissal of Fulton County Sheriff Jackie Barrett, the nation's first black female sheriff, on corruption charges. If Handel wins the run-off and prevails at the polls, she would be the first woman governor in the state of Georgia. She was elected Secretary of State in 2006. She implemented  the Georgia's photo ID law, which requires Georgian voters to show state-issued photo identification before casting their vote in person. She created the agency's first Chief Investigative Officer to go after perpetrators of elections and consumer fraud. The voter ID program sparked controversy and many in the black community said it worked against them and was a way to deter blacks from voting. The law was challenged as unconstitutional, but was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court.

Controversy also found Karen Handel, a protégé of Gov. Sonny Perdue, on other fronts. First and foremost, she has climbed the ranks professionally with just a high school diploma, when her opponent Nathan Deal was educated at Mercer University and Walter F. George School of Law in Macon, Ga. He also served in the United States Army. It seems that Karen Handel didn't place any value on getting an education and that speaks volumes. Don't get me wrong. Many people have attained the highest levels of success without a college degree, but Karen Handel, if governor, will be in a position to effect change in education and the Board of Education in this state. How can she act in the best interest of the students of Georgia, when she placed such little importance to gaining a solid education?

Secondly, an issue from her time as a candidate for the commission continues to dog her. The former head of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay and lesbian GOP voters, recently released emails from 2002 and 2003, all sent from Ms. Handel's e-mail address, indicating she supported granting benefits to county employees in same-sex domestic partnerships. She has vehemently denied sending these e-mails. She said it was her campaign manager in her failed 2002 race. She also denies ever filling out a questionnaire for Georgia Equality, another gay rights group, that also showed her supporting domestic partner benefits, even though it was on her campaign's letterhead. She said the only thing that should matter is the fact that she voted against a proposal to extend benefits to domestic partners. She also said she would back legislation to outlaw gay marriage. Not good.

In a recent interview with 11 Alive's Doug Richards, she said a child should be in a household with married heterosexual parents. A home without such a makeup is not a suitable environment to raise a child. She was then asked about single parents and sidestepped the issue, but it was abundantly clear that she doesn't view such a home favorably. That speaks to the fact that Karen Handel won't make significant inroads in the black community. I wonder how her background, which was fraught with problems at home, makes her an expert on parenting in the home? She said her mother was an abusive alcoholic and her father was a passive bystander, who did nothing to help his children by leaving the home with them in tow. Don't get me wrong, there are many people who lived in such a household and pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and were successful in their lives. That doesn't mean that Karen Handel is suddenly an expert on the family and family structures. She also said she is not in favor of gays adopting children. Again, that is very hypocritical, considering there is no hard evidence that states living in a home with same-sex parents is detrimental to the wellbeing of a child.

To be honest, the only thing I applaud Karen Handel for is her stance on abortions in certain situations, such as rape and incest of a minor. Other than that, I see her as nothing more than talking points. It is unfortunate that the Democratic Party doesn't have a better candidate than Roy Barnes, who may win on name recognition and strong support from the black community. Or, it could go the opposite way and another Republican will become our next governor. I am personally not thrilled about Roy Barnes as governor again. Been there, done that. Though some analysts have said blacks could help former governor Roy Barnes get his old job back. He has rounded up a slew of prominent black endorsements form local pastors to civil rights icons and many in between.

Nathan Deal has accused Handel of failing to serve a complete term in office, much like her endorser Sarah Palin. She has disputed this characterization, though she announced late last year that she would resign as secretary of state to run for governor. Deal is also guilty of cutting-and-running. He resigned from Congress before the end of his term to pursue the governor's seat. His resignation also stopped a Congressional investigation into allegations he violated House ethics rules by lobbying Georgia officials not to change a state program that benefited his own business. I would also love to know how all three propose to bring jobs to Georgia, since the state ranks second in job losses nationwide. Still, I can't endorse Karen Handel without the thought of her being an enemy of blacks, Latinos, gays and lesbians. Nothing in her campaign has led me to think otherwise.

Note: I called Karen Handel's campaign office in Alpharetta, Ga., last Thursday, to get her views on the issues of greatest concern to the black and Latino communities, and I have yet to get a return phone call. I would hate to think that the issues we hold dear in our communities don't matter very much to her.

Andrew Breitbart Twists Words of Black Radio Show Personalities Bev Smith & Warren Ballentine on CNN Panel

Andrew Breitbart twists words of black radio personalities Bev Smith & Warren Ballentine, CNN panelists discussing events surrounding Shirley Sherrod's forced resignation.

CNN's Don Lemon presented a short documentary on former USDA official Shirley Sherrod, who was thrown under a bus by the Obama Administration and the NAACP after ultra conservative sleazebag Andrew Breitbart unleashed a modern-day lynching of Mrs. Sherrod over her statement that she didn't help a white farmer, Roger Spooner, as much as she could because he was white. Breitbart is at it again.

This time, he has set his sights on black radio personalities Bev Smith and Warren Ballentine, who were on the CNN panel after to discuss the events surrounding Mrs. Sherrod's forced resignation. Breitbart has taken offense to Bev Smith's statement that "we need white folk to be talking about race." Again, he took one snippet of what she said and has run with it. Similarly, for Warren Ballentine, who said of the Tea Party, "we don't think you're racist, we think your ideology is racism." He was specifically referring to state rights and the fact that Jim Crow laws came out of that. He also said we are all brothers and sisters. We have to get pass race. It seems that Breitbart still hasn't learned not to twist the words of others by taking their words out of context. All I can say to Andrew Breitbart is "you are barking up the wrong tree when you take on Warren Ballentine."
