Rev. Jesse Jackson says Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert sees LeBron James as a "runaway slave" and "his feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality."
I knew it was a matter of time before Rev. Jesse Jackson gave his two cents about LeBron James' decision to sign with the Miami Heat and kick the Cleveland Cavaliers to the curb. For once, I am inclined to agree with Jackson, but his choice of words have left me shaking my head. He told the
Chicago Sun Times that Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cavaliers, sees LeBron James as a "runaway slave" and that the owner's comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger. Considering that there are some nutjobs in Cleveland who burned jerseys with James' number, then one can make the argument that he could be in danger, but I seriously doubt that.
Jackson said Gilbert's comments were "mean, arrogant and presumptuous."
"He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers," the reverend said in a release from the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. "His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship -- between business partners -- and LeBron honored his contract." Source
I just don't understand why the media made such a circus out of James' decision and I am shocked that this has sunk into a racial issue -- runaway slave, slave owner, etc. Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was the first person who pushed the notion of modern-day slavery in the NBA and the entertainment world, in which he specifically mentioned LeBron James and Jay-Z's names. Dan Gilbert was out of line for making his criticism of LeBron James' decision to leave Cleveland personal. The man gave Cleveland seven years and there is no rule that said he couldn't go to another team to play. This was last week's news, why is Rev. Jesse Jackson and others rehashing it again?
