Right wing evangelical Gary McCullough says Ellen DeGeneres forced out because she is a lesbian and "there is a limit on what Christian viewers will tolerate.
I generally stay away from showbiz-type stories, but I find it very interesting that Gary McCullough, a director of Christian Wire, could have the hubris to say I told you so over Ellen DeGeneres' decision to resign as one of the judges on "American Idol." His reason is based on his belief that so-called Christians wouldn't accept a lesbian as a judge on a prime time television show. Er, could the reason for Ellen DeGeneres' departure be that she cannot sing and had no business critiquing the contestants. Last year R&B legend Patti Labelle said that some judges on the show have no business in such a role because they have no experience in that regard.Lost on Gary McCullough is the fact that Kara DioGuardi has been fired from the show. This had nothing to do with her sexuality, as is the case with DeGeneres. It is amazing how the religious right will twist words and act as though they are the judge and jury of every facet of this country's being. He's an excerpt from his press release:
When it comes to the business relationship between American Idol and Ellen DeGeneres, to the chagrin of Pansy Hilton and a multitude of homo-fascist bloggers, I am on an I-told-you-so roll. The moral of the story, contrary to what Gary McCullough believes, is that "American Idol" has run its course and is no longer a ratings bonanza, especially in light of Simon Cowell's departure. This isn't about Ellen DeGeneres being a lesbian host. Clay Aiken came second during one season's competition and has had a good career, despite the fact he is a homosexual. Who cares? Certainly not Hollywood. He says there is a limit to what Christian viewers will tolerate. Really? That sounds like a lot of right wing evangelical BS to me.
In January, I wrote, "I am confident that the producers of American Idol will be shocked when their market share has cratered, and will in all honesty find a dozen other reasons for the drop in ratings. After all, what successful television producer could have a clue what wholesomeness is as long as they see promoting homosexuality as a virtue."
In May, I wrote, "Here is my next prediction. There will be no left wing social activist as a judge for the tenth season of American Idol. Not only will DeGeneres be gone, she will not be replaced by anyone close to a Rosie O'Donnell wanna-be." The question now is; can American Idol be saved. I say no. Ellen DeGeneres skied over that bull-shark and the audience she drove away will never return. Idol may as well succumb to slobbering panders of Hilton and bring him on as a judge and nuke the fridge.
