Gary DeToma, 41, accused of murdering his five year old son, Gary DeToma Jr., and attempting to murder his four year old son in his Decatur, Ga., apartment.
What would possess a parent to murder their child is beyond me. Gary DeToma Sr., 41, of Decatur, Ga., is accused of soffocating his five year old son, Gary DeToma Jr., to death and attempting to do the same to his four year old son inside his apartment Monday. He and his wife are currently estranged and he did not return the children after a weekend visit. DeToma, who is expected to go before a judge Tuesday, remained in jail Tuesday charged with murder and aggravated assault.
Investigators said DeToma and his wife are in the middle of a divorce. When DeToma failed to return Gary Jr. and his younger brother to their mother after a weekend visit, the family became worried. And when DeToma failed to show up for work, a co-worker went to check on him.
“There was a 4-year-old little boy who met him at the door and could only tell him that his father was upstairs. When the co-worker went upstairs he found the 5-year-old boy laying in the bed and he appeared to be deceased," said Dep. Chief Keith Lee of the Decatur Police Department. Source: WSB-TV
Thankfully, the four year old boy, who police said suffered some oxygen deprivation, will be okay. I know there will be people who take the position that Mr. DeToma was a nice man and snapped at the prospect of a divorce, but there is really no excuse or justification for what he did. He has brought sorrow and dispair of enormous proportions. I don't know if his estranged wife and family can ever get over this unspeakable loss and act of violence that he unleashed.
