Nicky Diaz, Former Housekeeper of CA GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Meg Whitman, Says She was Fired Because She was an Illegal Immigrant

California billionaire Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is about to feel the wrath of jump-off lawyer extraordinaire Gloria Allred. Why? Whitman's former housekeeper, Nicky Diaz, alleged she was wrongfully fired after nine years of employment when she told her she was an illegal immigrant and asked for help in gaining legal residency. According to Fox News, she claimed Whitman knew she was an illegal immigrant when she hired her in 2000 and was aware of her illegal status. She maintains she was fired only after Whitman announced her bid for California's top office. Hah. This will work in her Democratic opponent, Jerry Brown's favor.Whitman told Fox News the charges made by Diaz were "definitely a lie" and said she fired her once she confessed to being an illegal immigrant.

Whitman

с обич...

От щастие се днес разплаках...
в прегръдки нежни времето се спря.
И нищо друго аз не искам
щом сега си ти до мен.
Ти си моят дар вълшебен,
в най-обикновения ми ден.

Kenneth Lumpkin, a Liberty county, Ga., sheriff's deputy has been charged with the murder of Lori Arrowood, the missing wife of a soldier., Nate Arrowood, who was deployed to Iraq and is expected home shortly.
Arrowood, 42, was reported missing from her Hinesville home by a friend Saturday night and was last seen around 1 p.m. that day, Keith Moran, chief deputy of the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, said.

The Georgia Search and Rescue team and more than 100 soldiers from Fort Stewart looked for her, but could not find her. Her body has not been found. Source: AJC
Golden. Someone charged with upholding the law, breaking the law. Mrs. Arrowood's body was found in Long County in a wooded area near a rural highway. She reportedly knew Kenneth Lumpkin.

Rutgers Student, Tyler Clementi, Commits Suicide After Dharun Ravi & Molly Wei Secretly Making Sex Tape & Broadcasting on Internet

Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi reportedly commits suicide after roommate & friend, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, secretly tapes him and posts video to the Internet.

Tyler Clementi (Facebook)
During my undergraduate years at Ohio University in Athens, I saw a lot of crazy things, with the weirdest being in a room with a former roommate having sex with her boyfriend because they thought I was asleep. Though her screaming could have awaken the entire hall. That's a picture I don't care to revisit. Still, the thought that a student could commit suicide because he was allegedly being secretly taped during a sexual encounter with another male by two other students is mind-boggling. According to WPIX-11, fellow freshmen Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton have been charged with invasion of privacy for allegedly placing a camera in the 18-year-old Tyler Clementi's dorm room. What's worst, police said parts of the recording were placed on the internet.
Ravi was additionally charged with two more counts of invasion of privacy for trying to use the hidden camera to view the same student during another sexual encounter just three days later on Sept. 21.

According to sources, the victim from Ridgewood -- whose identity PIX 11 News is withholding -- is believed to have jumped off the George Washington bridge on Thursday, Sept. 23. The victim's car was found nearby with both his cell phone and computer inside. Source: WPIX-11
This is just sick and disturbing on so many levels. As I stated before, I saw some of the craziest things on campus at OU, but I never entertained the thought of taping the incidents. That just wasn't my dogfight to get into. These two students need to learn to mind their own damn business. Still, I wouldn't commit suicide. I would meet the two students in court and have the last laugh by suing them for emotional distress. My thoughts and prayers go out to Tyler Clementi's family.

GA Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Nathan Deal Financial Woes Make Him Unsuitable to Become Governor

Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal is in for a rough ride because he son-in-law Chapter 7 bankruptcy debacle and the fact that he loaned them millions for a failed outdoors business. You see, you can't lie on your bankruptcy documents and expect to be given a slap on the wrist. Well, let me back up.... Deal's daughter, Carrie, and her husband, Clint Wilder, filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition in 2009 for their failed business that left them with $2.1 million in debts, but it seems that Wilder neglected to inform the court, by way of his paperwork, that he had filed for bankruptcy in 2001. The federal bankruptcy law states that debtors must wait at least eight years between bankruptcies to have their debts discharged under Chapter 7 of the federal bankruptcy code.

So, Carrie & Clint Wilder have a big problem on their hands, not to mention the fact that Nathan Deal has a big public relations mark from this as well. You see, the couple could see their bankruptcy case tossed out and possibly face criminal charges for lying under oath. Nathan Deal's office was quick to say the couple are not public figures and not running for office, but it does speak to his ability to make sound financial decisions. He should have made sure he and his wife were named in the bankruptcy petition as creditors. He seems to chock that up to an error.

Further, questions still swirl around Deal's personal finance. This time his latest financial disclosure has raised eyebrows.
Deal might not have followed state guidelines for valuing certain properties in the amended financial disclosure for 2009 that he filed Sept. 23 with the State Ethics Commission. The disclosure might reflect fair-market values, but they do not appear to conform with state guidelines.

The Sept. 23 disclosure, filed seven days after a previous amended disclosure, came after scrutiny about turmoil in his personal finances arose and certain assets and liabilities appeared to be omitted from earlier reports. Source
Though I find former Gov. Roy Barnes a less than stellar candidate, particularly since he served in the same position previously and was not terribly effective, I find Nathan Deal's financial blemishes a big deterrent to getting my vote. I just don't see how he can be a good governor fiscally speaking. If you can't handle your own finances, then how can we expect you to do the same for Georgia, a state that has seen high unemployment and foreclosure rates, as well as shaky school test scores, high crime rates in certain pockets and a whole host of other problems. Roy Barnes is the lesser of two evils. With Nathan Deal, there's not telling what other financial issue will be uncovered. Is he really worth the hassle?

Rev. Arthur Burton Schirmer Arrested for Allegedly Killing Second Wife, Probe Re-opened in Mysterious Death of First Wife

Talk about snake in the pulpit and a wolf in sheep's clothing. Rev. Arthur Burton Schirmer was arrested in the death of his second wife, wife Betty, in 2008, after Joseph Mustante allegedly commits suicide in his office at Reeders United Methodist Church, led investigators to him. He allegedly staged the car accident that claimed his wife's life. The investigators also re-opened the case of his first wife's mysterious death to see whether he played a role. Schirmer's first wife, Jewel, died in April 1999 from a traumatic brain injury after she purportedly fell down a flight of stairs in Lebanon, Pa. Last night I watched the "Nancy Grace Show" and I learned that she sustained injuries that were not consistent with a fall. But, no-one doubted his account because he was a pastor.
Rev. Arthur Burton Schirmer, 62, entered no plea Monday in a Tannerville, Pa., courtroom, hours after authorities arrested him at his Reeders home for the 2008 death of wife Betty, 56.

The man who broke in and shot himself at the desk in Schirmer's office at the Reeders United Methodist Church, Joseph Mustante, was the husband of the pastor's secretary, Cynthia Musante, Poconos Township Police Detective James Wagner said. Source
It is a real shame that so many pastors are involved in unsavory and criminal behavior. Pastor Schirmer knew he was committing adultery when he engaged in a sexual relationship with another man's wife. It is a sad commentary that the words in the Bible are factual in the cases of rogue pastors -- wolves in sheep's clothing.

LA Times Under Fire for Publishing Teacher Performance Ratings that Possibly Pushed to Teacher, Rigoberto Ruelas Jr., to Commit Suicide

The Los Angeles Times is under fire after a teacher's suicide, which the teachers union is attributing to the newspaper's publication of teacher performance ratings on its website in August. Rigoberto Ruelas Jr., 39, was a fifth-grade teacher at Miramonte Elementary School, whose body was found Sunday at the foot of a remote forest bridge. The United Teachers Los Angeles union is asking the newspaper to remove the ratings from its website, according to Fox News. It is premature for the union to take this position, since it's not clear what are the circumstances surrounding his death. At least that's what the police department is saying.
The body of 39-year-old Rigoberto Ruelas Jr., a fifth-grade teacher at Miramonte Elementary School, was found Sunday at the foot of a remote forest bridge. Investigators believe he jumped to his death, although the inquiry is continuing, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

The motive for Ruelas taking his own life is far from clear. But union officials said he had been upset since the Times published his district ranking as a "less effective" teacher based on his students' standardized English and math test scores.

Ruelas scored "average" in getting his students up to acceptable levels in English, but "less effective" in math, and "less effective" overall. The school itself ranked as "least effective" in raising test scores, and only five of Miramonte's 35 teachers were ranked as average. Source
If he committed suicide because he was despondent over his name being among the teachers rated, then he could have redoubled his effort to correct his shaky record. There was clearly no need for him to commit suicide, unless this was caused by another problem in his life.

Police Arrest Nicholas Welch in Shooting Death of Seton Hall Honor Student Jessica Moore, 2nd Suspect Marcus Bascus Still At Large

Seton Hall University honor student, Jessica Moore, met an untimely death at a house party last weekend. The suspected gunman, Nicholas Welch, has been apprehended and police are searching for a second suspect, identified as Marcus Bascus. Welch, 25, of East Orange, was taken into custody Monday night at his home, just a few doors down from the site of the heinous act, that left Moore, 19, dead.

Welch is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2 million bail, said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino, according to the Star-Ledger. It's no surprise to learn that he has multiple prior arrests for drug possession, according to records. Police said Bascus will be charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses when he is arrested.

Four other people were shot in the incident, but the injuries were not life-threatening. The names of the wounded are Nicosia Henry, 18, a freshman on the university's women’s basketball team; Yvan Christophe, 25, a graduate of New Jersey Institute of Technology; Daryl Elmore, 2, and Xavier Lee, a NJIT senior from Cliffside Park. This is such a senseless act of gun violence. According to the Star-Ledger, police said the gunman was barred from entering the crowded party in a rented student apartment in East Orange late Friday night. He then reportedly got into a brief physical altercation with some of the hosts at the door as they threw him out, according to several witnesses. True to form, he later returned and opened fire. Why? Why? Why?

University of Texas Under Lockdown, Gunman Dead of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

BREAKING: A gunman who fired several shots in the Perry-Casteneda Library on the University Texas campus is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and are looking for a possible second suspect, according to the Statesman.
A gunman who fired several shots in the Perry-Casteneda Library on the UT campus is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and are looking for a possible second suspect, officials say. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that the shooter is dead, but UT continues to be locked down, and people are urged to stay out of the area. Officials say it appears there are no other injuries. UT spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said witnesses had reported that the man was armed with automatic weapon. “The shooter is dead on the sixth floor of Perry-Castaneda Library, said Don Hale, a UT spokesman. “No identification. Apparently took his own life.”

NY Daily News: Sarah Palin May Have Been Booed at Last Night's Episode of "Dancing With the Stars"

I am no fan of former Alaska Gov. Sarah "Quitter" Palin, but the New York Daily News ran an article saying she may have been booed at last night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars." She made an appearance to support her contestant daughter, Bristol. It's ironic that she missed the premiere, but decided to show up for a photo op mid-way through the show, which may have led to boos from some in the audience.

WSJ Jason Riley Says Historically Black Colleges & Universities are "Academically Inferior"

Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Riley seems to think historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are inferior. In fact, his exact words are, "once an essential response to racism, they are now academically inferior." Personally, I didn't envision the possibility of getting my college education at a HBCU for the simple fact that I wanted to broaden my horizons and not limit my college education to a black or white school. I wanted to attend a school that was a melting-pot and one that had strong academics. Don't get me wrong. I am in no way ignoring these institutions of higher learning. The reality is, if the same standard was applied to the HBCUs as most major universities, then the ones that aren't at the top of the list would improve tremendously.
Earlier this month, Mr. Obama hosted a White House reception to celebrate the contributions of the nation’s 105 black colleges and to reiterate his pledge to invest another $850 million in these institutions over the next decade.

Recalling the circumstances under which many of these schools were created after the Civil War, the president noted that "at a critical time in our nation's history, HBCUs waged war against illiteracy and ignorance and won." He added: "You have made it possible for millions of people to achieve their dreams and gave so many young people a chance they never thought they'd have, a chance that nobody else would give them."

The reality today, however, is that there's no shortage of traditional colleges willing to give black students a chance. When segregation was legal, black colleges were responsible for almost all black collegians. Today, nearly 90% of black students spurn such schools, and the available evidence shows that, in the main, these students are better off exercising their non-HBCU options.

"Even the best black colleges and universities do not approach the standards of quality of respectable institutions," according to economist Thomas Sowell. "None has a department ranking among the leading graduate departments in any of the 29 fields surveyed by the American Council of Education. None ranks among the 'selective' institutions with regard to student admissions. None has a student body whose College Board scores are within 100 points of any school in the Ivy League." Source
I certainly would not say all the HBCUs are inferior, Florida A&M University, Morehouse & Spelman Colleges, Hampton University, Dillard University and Howard University, are far from inferior. I will admit, when I started looking at possible colleges to attend during my high school senior year, I was given some brochures by a black pastor to some HBCUs and I scoffed at the idea because of the quality of education at a handful of these institutions, specifically the ones he gave me brochures for. Coupled with the fact that I had never heard about some of those schools. I settled on Ohio University in Athens because it was a top 10 university for Journalism. Still, we can't lose sight of why HBCUs came into being in the first place and we can't relegate them to the back of the line in today's world. They should be afforded the same treatment as other colleges and universities in the U.S. and given a chance to improve, particularly those with the most challenges.

Two of Bishop Eddie Long Accusers, Maurice Robinson & Anthony Flagg, Seen in Profanity-Laced Video

Bishop T. D. Jakes Weighs in Gay Sex Scandal Involving Bishop Eddie L. Long, Says All Involved Needs Prayer

Bishop Eddie Long's buddy T. D. Jakes has weighed in on the gay sex scandal the mega-church pastor has found himself in. Jakes called for prayer for all involved. He said there is nothing to say right now. He said when all this is over, everyone involved in this mess will need the blood of Jesus. Jakes was smart enough not to take sides in the eventuality that the allegations are true.

DOJ Prosecutor Nicolas A. Marsh Commits Suicide Amid Investigation for Misconduct in Handling of Ted Stevens Case

As they say, karma is a bi**h. How else would you explain why Nicolas A. Marsh, a Justice Department prosecutor, who killed himself? He committed suicide while under investigation over whether he and other attorneys in the prosecution of Sen. Ted Stevens acted improperly in the case.
Nicholas A. Marsh, 37, committed suicide on Sunday, two years after being part of the Justice Department team that convicted Stevens on corruption charges that were eventually thrown out. Marsh's suicide was confirmed by his lawyer, Robert Luskin.

The prosecutors in the Stevens case failed to disclose evidence favorable to the defendant as Supreme Court precedent requires. The omission was so serious that Attorney General Eric Holder stepped in and asked a federal judge to throw out Stevens' convictions, which the judge did, while taking the additional step of appointing a prominent Washington attorney, Henry Schuelke, to investigate possible improprieties by the prosecutors. Source: AJC
Marsh just couldn't stand the heat in the kitchen, so he decided to take the easy way out. So many times we have heard of over zealous prosecutors changing the course of an innocent person's life by presenting a flawed case that the jury buys and the judge imposes a severe sentence. Ted Stevens should have never been subjected to such a harrowing experience for what he was accused of doing -- taking bribes. Scooter Libby, a lackey for former Vice President Dick Cheney, was given a slap on the wrist for far worse offenses that Stevens, who recently died in a plane crash.

TN Biology Teacher Darryl Jones Charged with Statutory Rape for Having Sexual Relationship with Teenage Girl

Darryl Jones, biology teacher in Shelby County, TN, arrested & charged with statutory rape for having sexual relationship with teenage girl.

Darryl Jones, a Shelby County, TN, biology teacher, was charged with statutory rape by an authority figure after a 17-year-old girl was found hiding in his bedroom closet.
The Commercial Appeal reports 26-year-old Darryl M. Jones was arrested Friday at his home after the teen's mother told police she suspected her daughter and Jones were involved in a sexual relationship.

Jones was released from jail on a $50,000 bond over the weekend. He is also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Source
Shameful. Absolutely shameful. Shouldn't he be fired and listed on a sex-offender registry? I applaud her mother for taking a stand and doing what any decent parent would do.

Hung Jury in Buju Banton Trial

This might be good news for Buju Banton and his lawyer. According to the Jamaica Observer, the jurors in the Buju Banton trial have just told US Judge Jim Moody that they have failed to come to a unanimous decision despite almost three days of deliberations. A new trial date is to be set and will be announced today. Banton's lawyer, David Markus, has applied for bail for him and the judge is expected to address the matter later today.

Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin Highlights Need for Smart Broadband Policies

We are happy to announce that former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin will be submitting a series of commentaries to The Hinterland Gazette. Below is the first submission in the series:

San Diego Summit Highlights Education and the Need for Smart Broadband Policies

On Sunday, September 19th, the Alliance for Digital Equality had the opportunity to host a panel discussion at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Conference in San Diego, CA.  This conference was focused on the important issue of higher education in America, specifically in communities of color.  As we have seen with the invention of online libraries and distance learning technology, they are helping to revolutionize and rethinking the way students are building their skill sets.  ADE was fortunate to be part of this event and have the opportunity to bring to the table the organization’s breadth of knowledge about the role of technology in modern education.

The panel topic was “Digital Broadband Empowerment: Bridging the Educational Divide,” a fitting theme for an event focused on educating the youth of America.  As most already know, many schools in minority and low income communities continue to struggle. Dropout rates are high, student achievement is uneven and morale is low. Too few youth have the opportunity to attend college.  However with increased access to high-speed Internet they can have expanded opportunities to achieve academic success and can gain access to post secondary educational opportunities.   Over the next few years we have the chance to empower our youth with new technologies and help change lives.

Broadband technology is an innovation that can offer all children a chance to gain new educational and vocational resources.  This is especially important in the fields of math and science where the U.S. has unfortunately fallen behind.  These resources, whether it is an interactive website to help explain math problems or finding new sources of information about college scholarships, are invaluable to young people who have dreams of success.  While many schools and homes are now wired, 14 million Americans still lack access to the technologies that our children need to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

Too many Americans are still without high-speed Internet leaving the children and their families without the same educational resources readily available to most Americans.  We must work harder and do more to include unserved and underserved communities in this digital revolution. Thankfully school leaders are increasingly investing in technology and Internet connectivity for students. This is because businesses and employers in the new economy expect that our youth are technologically proficient.  Whether it’s San Diego or Normandy, MO, dozens of large and small school districts are taking the right steps and making an investment in our children’s future.

If we are to accomplish our stated objective of universal broadband our public officials must consider policies that will create affordable access.  The policy framework for achieving universal broadband should draw heavily from the National Broadband Plan.  The Federal Communications Commission and Congress should follow a common sense path to ensure that we are not restricting the growth or adoption of high-speed Internet.  Additionally the one area where communities of color do not fall behind is access and use of mobile broadband -- this is clearly a bridge to connectivity and policymakers and regulators should be sensitive to this reality.

Millions of Americans are counting on Washington to get this right and make decisions in the best interest of low income and minority communities.

Creating new opportunities in our schools and homes will only help improve our quality of life and help give struggling communities a chance to succeed.  Broadband can create a level playing field for our children and establish economic equity for communities that have been historically disenfranchised.  Our leaders must enact smart policies that will promote innovation and investment. As mayor I found public-private partnerships work.  Washington needs to move forward with open, rigorous debate to find the right set of policy solutions that will positively impact the lives of millions that need and deserve broadband.

Black Philadelphia Teen, Lionel Franks, Spent Five Months in Prison for Murder He Didn't Commit

Money talks in the court system in the United States. How else can you explain how Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan can get a slap on the wrist for all their many brushes with the law and someone like Lionel Franks, who is black, can be sent to prison for a crime he did not commit? The penal system blocked this young man's progress. According to Philly.com, he should have graduated from high school in June, near the top of his class so that he could begin his college education at Lincoln University, studying culinary arts, but he was left in jail for allegedly shooting a man 12 times on a North Philadelphia street.
Franks' bad-dream detour into the city's criminal-justice system began April 9, a Friday mostly spent touring the Lincoln campus in rural Chester County. Back home in his Nicetown neighborhood by midafternoon, he changed into an Adidas sweat suit, green with white stripes down the pants and sleeves, and went shopping for sneakers at a sporting-goods store on Germantown Avenue.

Minutes into the return trip, Franks was swarmed by police. A man had just been gunned down 12 blocks away, they told him, and two witnesses had identified him as the shooter. Franks showed the officers his bag from Olympia Sports and his new shoes. "You got the wrong guy!" he protested as they cuffed him.

Even as the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office began building its attempted-murder case against Franks, the evidence was shrinking. The witnesses, it turned out, hadn't seen the gunman's face, only a black male in green sweats with white stripes down the pants and sleeves. The victim, having taken eight shots to the head and neck alone, could remember nothing. A store surveillance camera provided Franks with an alibi nearly down to the minute.

But the 18-year-old would stay behind bars through August, captive to a pair of tiny blood spots and the grindingly slow wheels of justice in an overcrowded court system. If not for a prosecutor with doubts about Franks' guilt, he might still be there. Source
So, we are still living in an age when "walking while black" is still a recipe for disaster. It is obvious that Franks didn't have the financial means of celebrities, but where do we draw the line? Do we continue to allow innocent young black men to be sent to prison for crimes they did not commit? Or do we continue to stereotype all black men in the United States saying once you are black, the presumption is you're guilty? Surely this isn't what the framers of our Constitution had in mind.

Patrick Dell Murders Wife, Natasha Whyte-Dell, Four Stepchildren Before Committing Suicide

SHOCK: Patrick Dell, a south Florida man, shot and killed his wife, Natasha Whyte-Dell, and four stepchildren Monday before committing suicide, according to the Florida Sun Sentinel. Dell went on the shooting rampage just before 2:00 a.m. A police officer reportedly heard gunshots and saw Dell leaving a residence at approximately 2:00am.
Authorities found the bodies of Dell’s estranged wife, 36-year-old Natasha Whyte-Dell, and four of Dell’s stepchildren, aged 10, 11, 13 and 14. A 15-year-old stepson was also shot and injured. Dell’s two children with Whyte-Dell, aged one and three, were unharmed. Source: Sun Sentinel
Once again, this is another case of domestic violence. This didn't have to happen. Mr. Dell could have gone his way and left his family alone. It is ironic that he took the lives of his stepchildren and not his own.

Paul Smallwood, World War II Vet, in Critical Condition After Beaten by Two Teens Outside Marietta Apartment

It is a low-down dirty shame that two teenage thugs beat a 93-year-old man, Paul Smallwood, in Marietta, Ga., Friday night.

According to WSB-TV, Smallwood, was outside his apartment at Crescent Square Apartments Friday night when he was hit in the head with a rock. The teens reportedly took his cellphone and wallet containing $27, WSB-TV said.

Smallwood, who is a World War II veteran, suffered head trauma and several broken bones, and is in critical condition.

Theresa Davis & Boyfriend Reginald Williams Arrested in Beating Death of her Two-Year Old Son, Aiyden Davis

Theresa Davis and her boyfriend, Reginald Williams, have been arrested in the beating death of her son, Aiyden Davis, who was found unconscious but breathing when emergency medical technicians found him inside a Bedford-Stuyvesant home Friday night. He died shortly after being taken to Interfaith Medical Center.
Police charged the child's mother, Theresa Davis, 27, with assault, possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. Her boyfriend, Reginald Williams, 31, was hit with second-degree murder charges.

Aiyden suffered blunt-impact injuries to his head, torso and extremities, a lacerated liver and internal bleeding, according to the medical examiner. "Aiyden was beaten to a pulp," cried Pamela Davis, Theresa Davis' aunt.

Distraught relatives said Williams - who sources said appeared to be drinking vodka - was baby-sitting the child, and made a tearful phone call moments before EMTs arrived. "He said, 'I'm sorry,'" said Pamela Davis, who received the panicked call. Source: NY Daily News
There is nothing that precious baby could have possibly done to deserve such treatment at the hands of his mother. Which woman in their right mind would allow a boyfriend to beat their child, much less beat him to a pulp? Some women just don't deserve to have children.

Embattled Bishop Eddie L. Long Speaks for First Time Makes Light of the Media Attention, Doesn't Repudiate Allegations of Sexual Misconduct

Eddie L. Long is at the podium really smug and being sarcastic, with that ridiculous looking wig on his head. There is a cult-like atmosphere abound at Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church this morning. He said this is an extremely difficult time for his family and the people in his church. He's joking about the whole thing. He says it's a time when you see the veil drop and see who's with you and who's not with you. He said he wants to help everybody and wants to thank all the pastors who left their churches to come to his church -- sons and daughters.

He said he wants to talk to congregation of how to handle difficult and painful situations. He started with Psalm 34:19 "many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him from all of them." He's stumbling over his words. Still no admission or denial of accusations. He's just dancing around the issue. Painful situations. Another scripture. Isaiah. He says life is filled with painful situations which makes the time of joy and happiness not as magnificent as we would like. Life will be unfair. He said we are all subject to face distasteful and painful situations. Said Bishop Long will have some bad situations. The righteous face painful situations with a determination. Comparing himself to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, terminally ill people, blankety, blankety!

The remedy for painful situation is described by David -- Psalm 23. He said David gives an insight on how to get through painful times. Must stay focused on the spiritual things that brought us thus far. Must be committed to prayer. He's talking about early voting. Cannot allow these allegations for outreach. Must continue to minister to those who are lost. Must focus on the power of worship. Encouragement. Must be there to encourage one another. Resolve. Must not forget our strength is not in man but in God.

He said he has never portrayed himself as a perfect man but is not the man being portrayed on television. He said "that is not me." The church breaks out in applause. He said he will not try case in the media. He said it will be tried in the court of justice. He said that's the only place he'll get justice. He said he feels like David against Goliath. He said he has five rocks and hasn't thrown one yet. Sorry, but isn't that a threat? He hasn't said I am not guilty. Wait, is there another accuser waiting to come forward? Maybe that's why he made that reference. He danced around the issue. Eddie L. Long is a master manipulator. Take a look at all the cases of sexual misconduct made against famous people -- Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker, Earl Paulk, Paul Crouch (co-founder of TBN) and others -- the truth prevailed and they were guilty of the allegations.

UPDATE#1 (09/26/10): Long just held a press conference that amounted to nothing. What he said there, he would have said last week when the story first broke. During the service he kept on saying he isn't a perfect man. That tells me that there is some truth to what the young men are alleging and he doesn't think what he did rose to the level of sexual coercion. Eddie L. Long didn't tell his congregation emphatically that the allegations are untrue. He prefaced it by saying he's not a perfect man and he's under fire. From a public relations standpoint he did nothing to quell the firestorm against him.

They are deliberately dragging this out and acting as though Bishop Long isn't facing such salacious allegations. Bernice King is looking like a fool begging and pandering for the offering. Eddie L. Long has started speaking at 9:03 a.m. He's being really smug and sarcastic. Said he will be here next week.

Тъжно ми е... и с причина  и без причина...
И пак това главоболие...
всяка промяна на времето в мене отчита...

CNN's Don Lemon Admits, During Interview About Embattled Pastor Eddie L. Long, to Being Molested as a Child

CNN's Don Lemon admitted on television tonight that he was molested as a child by a male. He said he had never talked about this openly before and had told his Mom when he was 30 years old. The admission was shocking and you could see the pain on his face. I applaud him for saying so. He didn't have to say it, but it was to prove a point about the way pedophiles operate. First they tell you how much they care about you. Spend time with you and then move in for the kill. There are many pedophiles in our midst and in places where you least expect them to be. They occupy all stations of life and come from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Oct. 7th Sentencing for NC Black Pastor Anthony Jinwright & Wife Harriet, for Tax Evasion, Delayed

Sentencing delayed for North Carolina Greater Salem City of God church pastor Anthony Jinwright & wife Harriet, on tax evasion charges.

Bishop Anthony Jinwright & Wife Harriet (Praise Charlotte)
So while Bishop Eddie L. Long and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church are engulfed in the mother of all sex scandals, there are other black pastors literally robbing their congregants blind. One black pastor who fits that description is convicted criminal Bishop Anthony Jinwright, who led the Greater Salem City of God church, with his wife Harriet. Both were found guilty of tax evasion. Jinwright was described as a "respected leader who traveled the country speaking at other churches," by one person during the trial. Really?

He and his wife were con artists who robbed the congregants blind. He was convicted on 13 of 18 charges, including conspiracy and multiple counts of filing false tax returns and tax evasion. The charges carry a maximum of 53 years in prison. He was acquitted on five counts of mail fraud. His wife, on the other had, was convicted on charges that carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. She was acquitted on three counts of tax evasion and six counts of filing false tax returns. She was allowed to remain free until sentencing, which has been delayed.

The couple, who own two Charlotte funeral homes, were accused during trial of failing to report more than $1.8 million in income on their federal tax returns between 2001 and 2007. To show how greedy this man was, he was willing to lie on applications for leases for two BMW cars. According to Q City Metro, during the trial, a former employee of a luxury car dealership testified that Bishop Jinwright had leased two BMW luxury cars for his daughter, Antonae -- one in 2003 and another in 2006 and that his church had leased a 2001 Mercedes-Benz S500 for Jinwright as a pastoral anniversary gift. Even Nelson Adesegha, a former finance administrator who tried to clean the financial mess up at the church was fired. According to Q City Metro, he said he tried to bring expenses in line with income – he cancelled church-issued credit cards for pastors Anthony and Harriet Jinwright. Disgusted yet? There's more.
Adesegha said he told the Jinwrights that they should include money from Anthony Jinwright’s housing allowance and vacation pay in their taxable income. He said he also told the senior pastor that his salary was too high for a church the size of Greater Salem. Even as Greater Salem was running a $1 million deficit, he said, salaries at the church totaled about 70-76 percent of its revenue. Asked by one of the government prosecutors how much Anthony Jinwright was making, Adesegha said: “Based on my analysis, it was close to $1 million.”
The lavish lifestyle continued unchecked. Another church employee, Larry Gandy, testified during the trial that the church had a special bank account used to buy luxury items for the couple. He said some of the items purchased included Louis Vuitton bags, luggage and clothing. According to Q City Metro, he also said the account was used to cover a $1,500-a-month lease payment on a Mercedes-Benz. He also added that during his last four years at the church as a director, once a month he stood during worship service and asked members to each contribute $3 in a special “pastor's aid offering.” That money was put in a separate account.

Anthony Jinwright and his wife, Harriett will not face the judge for sentencing on Oct. 7 as originally planned and it hasn't been rescheduled to-date. Judge Frank Whitney remanded Anthony into custody immediately after the jury verdict on May 3, 2010. He deemed him as an “an economic threat to the safety of the community.” The judge denied Dr. Jinwright’s motion for release in June. The judge said it right, he is an "economic threat to the community." The reality is he isn't the only pastor who fits that description. There are many more like him and the congregations of these churches led by hustlers, must take a stand and say enough is enough. They need to start walking outs, as was the case with the late Bishop Earl Paulk at the Cathedral at Chapel Hill, in metro Atlanta. The membership today is a fraction of what it was in its hey-day. The church even sought to sell the church and move to a smaller location because they could not afford it.

Disgraced Black Pastor, Eddie Long's Services to be Streamed Live by Local Media, As He Speaks to Congregation

For those of you who can't get enough of this gay sex scandal with Bishop Eddie L. Long, you'll be glad to hear his 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. services will be streamed by 11 Alive News and other news media. True to form, his love affair with the cameras will extend to his darkest hour, when he musters up the courage to speak to his congregants Sunday. Be sure to tune in to www.11alive.com, www.myfoxatlanta.com, www.wsbtv.com and I am sure CNN will carry it live as well. With that said, why does Eddie L. Long have black diamonds in the church? He is vain and arrogant, much like many black pastors of mega-churches across the United States. I would venture to say, Long isn't the only black or white pastor engaging in inappropriate behavior. There's a saying, if you live in a glass house, don't throw stones. All pastors across this country are now on notice. What's done in the dark will come to light.

It should be noted that he had a telephone conference Friday to speak to parishioners nationwide and did not say he was innocent. Had that been me and I was innocent of all the accusations, that would have been one of the first things I would have said, but you know the true will be revealed sooner or later. Here's an excerpt of what he said during the call:
Long said he was in the middle of a battle. He spoke in his own words for the first time since the allegations broke. "We will arise through this situation, and go forward, and we are moving forward," Long told other pastors.

"I have never dealt with anything like this before. I have been under attack before, but everything else has been different levels and different challenges," Long continued. Never once did Long say he was innocent, but he said the truth would be revealed, and that he is praying for his accusers."Know that I am also praying for the families and the young men who are accusing. I always operate in the spirit of love, and we are going to move through this," he said.
Right Bishop, you are under attack and one of your own choosing, I might add. Let's see what he says tomorrow, where he is expected to step down, according to Bossip. His church's motto is "Taking Authority," and I hope he will live up to that when he speaks on Sunday. He needs to step down and take care of this mess, whether through settlements, if proven true, or counter lawsuits of his own, if these salacious allegations are untrue. Either way, Eddie L. Long is a diminished man and he needs to "sit down" and deal with this.

Spencer LeGrande, 4th Man to Accuse Bishop Eddie L. Long of Sexual Coercion

Spencer LeGrande, fourth man to file a lawsuit accusing Bishop Eddie L. Long of sexual coercion.

I hope Bishop Eddie L. Long's wife is packing her bags because NO marriage can survive this mess. This is far worst than Ted Haggard's scandal of an inappropriate relationship with a male prostitute. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Attorney B. J. Bernstein is filing a lawsuit on behalf of Spencer LeGrande, a member of New Birth Charlotte, a satellite church of Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church. LeGrande and his mother were among the founding members of Long's satellite church.
Long "uses monetary funds from the accounts of Defendant New Birth and other corporate and non-profit corporate accounts, to entice the young men with cars, clothes, jewelry, and electronics."

LeGrande was 15 when he met Long in May 2005, the suit alleges. Two years later, he engaged in sexual activities with Long while the two vacationed in Kenya, according to the suit.

Long later encouraged him to move to Atlanta, where the activity continued through 2009, Bernstein says. He attended Beulah Heights University. Long is charged with breach of fiduciary duty; negligence; fraud; infliction of emotional distress and other counts based on sexual acts. Source
Shouldn't criminal charges be also in the wings for Long? This latest lawsuit suggests financial improprieties were committed. There is no way all these accusations are lies. No way.

AP: 4th Man Claims Sexual Relationship with Bishop Eddie Long

BREAKING: The AP is reporting that a fourth man claims relationship with Eddie Long.

A fourth young male member of Bishop Eddie Long's megachurch says the prominent pastor coerced him into a sexual relationship, according to The Associated Press.
Attorney B.J. Bernstein said she is filing a lawsuit Friday on behalf of a member of New Birth Charlotte. New Birth Charlotte is a satellite church run by Long in Charlotte, N.C. The man met Long in May 2005.

The lawsuit said Long took the teenager to Kenya in July 2005 when he was 17 and engaged in sexual activities with him.

It said that Long later encouraged him to move to Atlanta, where the activity continued until early 2009. Source: WSB-TV
Sorry, but the men are coming out of the woodwork. This is a disgrace and there is no way this can all be lies. Tiger Woods tried to sidestep the allegations of affairs with multiple women only to have to face the music later on. You can't run from this Bishop Long. I can't understand why this wasn't revealed before now. His inner circle had to have had an inkling that this repeated violation of young men was occurring. Where is Rev. Bernice King?

False Rumors of Buju Banton's Acquittal Swirl

There are rumors flying around that Buju Banton has been acquitted. That isn't true. The jury is still deliberating and a verdict may come this afternoon. The information on Twitter posted under Breaking News is not correct.

Report: Embattled Black Atlanta Mega-Church Pastor Eddie L. Long to Step Down Sunday

Bossip is reporting Bishop Eddie Long will step down from the pulpit following services this upcoming Sunday. At least 30 young men have reportedly contacted attorney B. J. Bernstein.
BOSSIP has learned from a well-placed source within the Church that AT LEAST 30 young men have contacted BJ Bernstein, the lawyer who filed the civil suit on behalf of Anthony Flagg, Maurice Robinson and Jamal Parris, and both Long and the Church are fearful more are coming.

Our source also tells us that Long had initially planned to step down from the Church today, however, with plans to address the congregation in this Sunday’s sermon it’s likely that he will announce his decision to take a reprieve from his duties when he is at the pulpit on Sunday.

An additional source familiar with Long and his practices at New Birth tells us that it’s a definite possibility that there could be at least that many plaintiffs, since Bishop Long selects new “Spiritual Sons” regularly and has been doing so for years!
More to follow.... This is a shock and has sent ripples throughout Atlanta.

Here's a song for all the people swearing that Bishop Long can do no wrong....

Reverend Jasper Williams & Other Pastors Meeting in Southwest Atlanta to Pray for Embattled Bishop Eddie L. Long

A group of metro Atlanta pastors are meeting to pray for the embattled mega-church pastor Eddie L. Long, who has been accused by three young men, Jamal Parris, Maurice Robinson and Anthony Flagg of sexual coercion.

According to MyFoxAtlanta, Reverend Jasper Williams of Salem Baptist Church is organizing the meeting and said it's goal is not to hear about the legal issues Eddie Long is facing but to rally around him in prayer. Really? Why else would they try to jump on the bandwagon? Why not also pray for the alleged victims? I find it strange that Long's dear friend Bishop T. D. Jakes has been largely silent on the sex scandal.

Bishop Long is expected to address his congregation Sunday on the allegations during the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. It is safe to say that the church will be bursting at the seams with attendees then.

Cambodian Immigrant Chhouy Harm Goes on Shooting Rampage Killing Two Granddaughters, Son-in-Law, Wounding Daughter

It is shocking to learn that a woman shot multiple people and it's even more shocking to learn a 69 year old grandmother is accused of fatally shooting three relatives and taking her own life. According to the Seattle Times, Chhouy Harm, a Cambodian immigrant in her 50s or 60s, was the family matriarch, who went berserk and killed her two teenage granddaughters, her son-in-law and wounding her daughter. Several relatives also said the woman was mentally ill and had been in and out of institutions or hospitals, though the shooting rampage came as a shock to them.
The grandmother told one relative to lock herself in her room. She then went downstairs Thursday afternoon and killed her son-in-law, as her panicked grandchildren began fleeing their West Seattle home, screaming and crying. Next she went into her daughter's bedroom, where two of her granddaughters were hiding, and shot them, too. As her daughter fled, Chhouy Harm took aim and fired into her back.

"Grandma just shot them for no reason," said 17-year-old Tony Sun, a member of the family who arrived home shortly after the shootings to see police lining his street. Sun said the wounded woman is Thyda Harm, who was taken to Harborview Medical Center and is expected to survive. Killed were Thyda's husband, Chean Harm Phan, and two of their daughters, Jennifer Harm, 17, and Melina Harm, 14. Source: Seattle Times
Seattle police said the motive for this unspeakable act of violence is unknown and this was the deadliest shooting in Seattle since Kyle Huff killed six people on Capitol Hill before killing himself in March 2006. Like domestic violence, mental illness is such a "dirty word" in some circles and is normally hidden from the public by relatives.

DeKalb County School District Distancing Itself Even Further From Big Donor Disgraced Black Mega-Church Pastor Eddie L. Long

Bishop Eddie Long has deep ties to the DeKalb county schools. He has donated thousands of dollars to county school and the school officials had started distancing themselves from him before the scandal broke and now they are even more cautious about their association with him. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, school officials said even though he has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school district, he doesn't have influence over them. It is interesting to note how deep the tentacles of mega church pastors extend into the community and the city at large in which they operate.
Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson said she is not a member of New Birth and has had no contact with Long since she took over the district in February. That includes not supplying school buses for a New Birth camp, like in previous years.

However, the school system does have existing contracts with the church, including a lease for the Leadership Preparatory Academy, a K-5 charter school that opened last month. The district pays $122,050 a year for rent, along with maintenance, security and insurance costs, according to a lease.

The Destiny Academy Of Excellence, which is also housed at the church, was previously a DeKalb charter school. The school lost charter status, but has since reapplied for charter status....

In addition to the dozens of volunteers, Long would meet with principals and deposit money into their school accounts to use at their discretion for building operations, Moseley said.

School records also show New Birth bought championship rings for the Miller Grove basketball team, football and basketball uniforms for Miller Grove and Lithonia, meals for students in evening classes, and prom attire and school supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims. Source
It is a natural progression for big businesses and politicians to distance themselves from anyone famous that has been accused of a crime or the subject of a scandal. That's nothing new, but the church's association with the school district is worth a second look. The school district said they use the church facilities as a venue for graduation, why? There are so many places in Atlanta that they could use without creating the impression that they are in bed with Eddie L. Long. There has to be a separation of church and state. What Long has done with the school district isn't illegal, but there is no reason why the influence of mega-church pastors should encompass our schools. No wonder B. J. Bernstein said that he is a very powerful man in metro Atlanta, specifically DeKalb County.

Local Media Coverage of Black Atlanta Mega-Church Pastor Eddie L. Long Gay Sex Scandal Magnifies

The gay sex scandal engulfing famed black Atlanta mega-church pastor Eddie L. Long is taking on ugly proportions. The news media is hanging on to every move Long and his family makes. I know this is the biggest scandal to erupt in metro Atlanta concerning a powerful local pastor, since the late Bishop Earl Paulk decade-long affair with Mona Brewer, who was married, and the revelation that his D. E. Paulk was really his son and not his nephew, as they claimed. Yesterday, WSB-TV, was outside his Lithonia home and caught some action going down at his home. The headline reads, "Vehicles, Security Race to Bishop Long's Home." What's funny is that no-one really knew if he was in any of the two vehicles that supposedly raced to his home.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones was outside Long's house when the vehicles arrived. Jones said moments after the SUV arrived, Long's wife showed up in a separate vehicle....

The activity outside Long's house followed an announcement that Long would wait until Sunday services at New Birth to speak publicly about claims that he coerced young men into sex, his lawyer said on Thursday. Long has repeatedly denied the accusations. Source: WSB-TV
This isn't news. Now if another lawsuit was filed or Bishop Long made some move to do something, such as issue a statement in person, then that's newsworthy. This is just pure BS.

Demario Atwater Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder of UNC-Chapel Hill Student Eve Carson

You will recall some time ago we blogged about the untimely death of UNC student Eve Carson in 2008. She was murdered by two thugs, Demario Atwater and Laurence Alvin Lovett. Well, Atwater will spend the rest of his life in federal prison for her murder, that's according to the sentence the judge handed down Thursday.
Atwater of Durham received a life sentence  on a charge of kidnapping resulting in death and a 10-year sentence on a separate charge of discharging a weapon resulting in death, plus another life sentence and two additional 10-year sentences to run concurrently on federal carjacking and weapons charges.

Federal District Court Judge James Beatty also imposed restitution of more than $212,000 to be paid monthly if Atwater ever gets out of prison. Beatty noted hat statutes required him to set a payment schedule. Source: Charlotte Observer
Atwater apologized to the family and said, "I'm sorry for for everything that's happened""No matter what the court did today it would be far from anything i should receive." Let's hope he has come to the realization that a life of crime does not pay and he will spend the rest of his behind bars, another life lost. Lovett's case is pending in Orange county.

Buju Banton's Prospects of Acquittal in Drug Trafficking Case Dims as Proscution Plays Damaging Tapes

Mark Myrie, AKA Buju Banton is literally between a rock and a hard place. His court trial for drug trafficking has begun and it doesn't look pretty for Banton, whose song, "Boom Bye Bye" has largely been reviled by the gay community because of its lyrics calling for assault on gays. According to Jamaica Observer, Banton couldn't stop shaking his head in court yesterday as he listened for a long period as the prosecution played damning recordings of his conversations with government informant Alexander Johnson, discussing drug deals and even diamond smuggling from Africa to Europe.
Yesterday, as the tapes were being played, one woman could be seen clutching her head and covering her ears. Others sat attentively, captivated by the conversations between the four-time Grammy nominee and Johnson, a convicted drug trafficker who has been working with the US Government since 1996 to sink other narco dealers.

Also played for the court was the video recording of December 8, 2009 in which Banton was seen tasting cocaine from a knife given to him by his long-time friend Ian Thomas after he used it to cut open a package containing five kilogrammes of cocaine during an undercover operation by the Sarasota Police Department at a warehouse. Source
If the allegations against Buju Banton are true, then he deserves to be imprisoned for a long time. He had so much to gain by staying on the narrow and straight path. This sends such a bad message to the young people of Jamaica who looked up to him.

UPDATE#1:   The fate of Buju Banton is now in the hands of a federal jury, which began deliberating Thursday in his drug conspiracy trial. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. According to the St. Peterburg Times, defense attorney David Markus argued that while Banton talked with a government informer about drugs, he never went through with the deal. But the U.S. Assistant Attorney James Preston begs to differ. He said Banton was a middle man in a drug transaction in which an associate of Banton would buy five kilos of cocaine from an undercover police officer.

GOP's Pledge to America Rings Hollow and Seems Like We've Been Here Before

The Republican Party has released its "Pledge to America," but this rings hollow and it feels like we have been here before, right? Seems to me they are pointing fingers at the Obama administration for things they allowed to run unchecked under George W. Bush's presidency. Seems like their epiphany came six years too late. I might also add, that the majority of the Republicans in Congress aren't for blacks, Latinos, gays or the middle class. They are only for the wealthy and well-connected, despite the handful of black Republican candidates on the ballot. The true Republican Party as we know it doesn't exist with guys like Jim DeMint, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh as leaders. They are all divisive and have pushed many untruths about President Barack Obama. Hit him on the issues, not because he is black.
America is an idea – an idea that free people can govern themselves, that government’s powers are derived from the consent of the governed, that each of us is endowed by their Creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. America is the belief that any man or woman can – given economic, political, and religious liberty – advance themselves, their families, and the common good.

America is an inspiration to those who yearn to be free and have the ability and the dignity to determine their own destiny.

Whenever the agenda of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to institute a new governing agenda and set a different course.

These first principles were proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence, enshrined in the Constitution, and have endured through hard sacrifice and commitment by generations of Americans.

In a self-governing society, the only bulwark against the power of the state is the consent of the governed, and regarding the policies of the current government, the governed do not consent.

An unchecked executive, a compliant legislature, and an overreaching judiciary have combined to thwart the will of the people and overturn their votes and their values, striking down longstanding laws and institutions and scorning the deepest beliefs of the American people.

An arrogant and out-of-touch government of self-appointed elites makes decisions, issues mandates, and enacts laws without accepting or requesting the input of the many.
We should not be fooled by this sudden change of heart of the Republican Party. Seems to me like they think we can't spot bullshit from fact. When the old establishment of the Republican Party, like the Democratic Party, is voted out of office, then we can start anew. Since we will still be dealing with the likes of Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Jon Kyl, Sen. Orrin Hatch, Sen. Jim DeMint, Sen. Jeff Sessions, Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Eric Cantor, etc., then this is much of the same.

Allegations of Sexual Abuse by Black Pastors Largely Untold in Many Black Churches

The gay sex scandal that erupted against Bishop Eddie L. Long and Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church is hardly anything new in the world of black churches and black clergy. Here is an excerpt for a fascinating article that appeared in the Boston Herald:
Clergy abuse in black churches of all denominations is vastly under-reported, experts said, with young victims too terrified to come forward for fear of being blamed and banned from their close-knit, family-oriented houses of worship. Indeed, P. Edward Harrison’s accusation against the Rev. Lawrence Brown of Mount Calvary Baptist Church is believed to be the first reported case in Boston of purported clergy abuse involving an alleged victim who is black, according to Department of Social Services officials.

“It is much more widespread than any of us want to believe,” said David Clohessy, the national director of the Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. “All sexual abuse is underreported. We believe clergy sex abuse more than most and clergy sex abuse in the minority communities is even less reported.” Clohessy said minority abuse victims have even fewer resources, more distrust and greater vulnerability. “If you’re a young African-American kid brought up in a family or neighborhood that has a considerable fear and skepticism toward the police - you’re not apt to speak up,” Clohessy said.

Many don’t come forward for fear of the “practical” consequences and harm that can surface, said Clohessy, who cited one black sexual abuse victim in the Midwest whose family depended on the church’s food bank. “He thought, ‘If I disclose, my family, literally, will go hungry,”’ he said.

Clohessy, who spent two years working in minority communities and churches in Boston, said it’s much harder for minority victims to grasp that they will be believed and supported - and not blamed. “While it’s very tough for anyone to speak up, if you are African American or Hispanic or Vietnamese, ministers are often held in minority cultures in even higher esteem,” Clohessy said. Phillip Aaron is a Seattle-based attorney who represents about 100 black victims allegedly abused by Catholic clergy. But Aaron estimates that less than 10 percent of sexual abuse victims in black, non-Catholic churches nationwide have gone to authorities. Source
What has happened in many black churches, and dare I say, a few white ones, when a scandal breaks about their pastors is nothing short of shocking. Many of the congregants will surround the pastor and protect him, ad nauseam, knowing that they can't vouch for every second of their pastor's life. This blindness is worth noting, as evident in the latest scandal involving Bishop Eddie L. Long, senior pastor at Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. It should be noted that there are some rumors floating out there that Jamal Parris, the third male to file a lawsuit against Long for sexual coercion, attempted suicide because of the alleged inappropriate sexual relationship with Long.

Coming Soon, the Hinterland Gazette's Expose "Why Some Black Pastors Seem to be so Materialistic"

The Hinterland Gazette's new expose is coming soon: "Why Black Pastors Seem to be so Materialistic." It seems that many black pastors, particularly those with fairly big churches, believe driving a Bentley or a Rolls Royce is a badge of honor and preach the flawed "gospel of prosperity," when so many people in their congregations are struggling to make ends meet. We will present a jaw-dropping, thought-provoking, in-depth study into the lifestyles of many black pastors.

Shelby County Schools in TN to Consider Random Drug Testing of Students

Shelby County, TN, schools students involved in after-school activities including football, choir and more may soon be subject to random drug testing, according to the Commercial Appeal.
The superintendent of county schools plans to propose a measure that will give schools the ability to randomly test students for drugs and alcohol, regardless of whether there's reasonable suspicion. On the agenda for today's work session, the new policy would allow school administrators to test all students involved in extracurricular activities.

Prior to new Tennessee legislation, schools could drug test only if they had probable cause to believe a student was using drugs. It's now up to individual school districts to set their own drug-testing policies. Source
Of course, parents will have to provide a written consent under the new policy. Well, if this helps to cut down drug use among students, then I am all for it, but will this lead to racial profiling of students deemed at-risk?

Third Lawsuit Filed Against Bishop Eddie L. Long by Jamal Parris Accusing him of Sexual Abuse

Attorney B. J. Bernstein releases shocking cell phone pictures Bishop Eddie L. Long allegedly sent to victim(s) shortly after Jamal Parris files lawsuit.

A third lawsuit has been filed against Bishop Eddie L. Long and the Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church. Jamal Parris, the plaintiff, is also being represented by Attorney B. J. Bernstein. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in DeKalb County Court, according to WSB-TV.

This is devastating to the members of Newbirth and the city of Atlanta. This is akin to the Tiger Woods scandal. The complaints lodged by Paris are similar to those of the other two men, Anthony Flagg and Maurice Robinson. I pray that the truth is revealed sooner rather than later. If Bishop Long is guilty of these accusations, then his standing in the city of Atlanta and beyond will be sullied for a very long, long time. This is a disgrace.

As I wrote in the first article, I said if these allegations are untrue, then Bishop Long needs to get before the cameras and fight for his reputation. If the allegations are true, then he needs to step aside and let justice run its course. I can't imagine if such gut-wrenching false accusations are made about me, being able to just let my attorney speak for me. His congregants deserve to hear from him on this mess. This is so reminiscent of the Tiger Woods and Ted Haggard scandals. Somewhere in the middle of this mess is the truth. Bishop Long is expected to hold a press conference on Thursday.

UPDATE#1:  Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes has canceled an appearance with Long amid growing accusations of gay sex with young males.

UPDATE#2:  Watch the slide show of shocking pictures released by B. J. Bernstein of Eddie L. Long, below.....

SLIDESHOW: Plaintiffs' Attorney Releases Photos

Eddie L. Long was scheduled to appear on Kiss 104.1 for an interview this morning. That has been canceled. Not sure if the press conference will go on as planned. All press conferences have been canceled. Why is a grown man sending racy pictures of himself to young men? If those pictures came from his cell phone, he should be ashamed of himself.

UPDATE#3: LISTEN TO ROLAND MARTIN'S INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG GILLEN.

Stay tuned.  More to follow.

Cleavage Comes to Sesame Street Courtesy of Katy Perry

Cleavage comes to Sesame Street in the form of Katy Perry. So much for Sesame Street staying above the fray and not sexualizing guests on its shows. It is too much to let children be children?

UPDATE: Sesame Street said in a statement Thursday that in light of the "feedback we've received" after the bit was aired on YouTube, they won't include it on the show. While the show said it was still available on YouTube, it had been removed by the official Sesame Street YouTube channel. Other versions on YouTube have generated thousands of hits.

Timothy Taylor, UF Professor, Fired Over Comments About How Latin Women Dress

Timothy Taylor, a University of Florida professor of food and resource economics, was fired over his comments about how Latin women dress. According to MyFoxOrlando, he plans to challenge his termination.  Taylor, who taught at UF's Gainesville campus, was sent a letter of termination Friday that said he "behaved inappropriately" toward female students for saying during a lesson about sexual harassment that Latin American women dress more provocatively than American women.

The problem for Taylor is this isn't the first time he has been accused of making offensive comments. According to MyFoxOrlando, he had been suspended twice for inappropriate interactions with female students, most recently in 2008. Maybe the university just got sick of dealing with his loose lips! Can you blame them? Sooner or later a lawsuit may be filed over comments he has made or may make in the future.

Taylor reportedly told the Gainesville Sun that he plans to file a grievance to challenge the termination. He claims he was just pointing out the cultural differences mean Latin American women dress more provocative than other women in the United States.

Liberty City Group Led by Elaine Black Go Door to Door to Seek Solutions to Address Crime Wave as Part of "Zero Tolerance Zone"

Liberty City section of Miami is crime-ridden and I must applaud Elaine Black, president of the Liberty City Trust, for taking the extraordinary step of going from door-to-door to help stem the crime wave in the community. She went to each home to hear the concerns and needs of the residents. Black and other volunteers from other organizations were spurred into action by a drive-by shooting at the end of May that injured two boys, ages 4 and 9, as they played basketball at 1231 NW 58th Ter. Then another senseless act of gun violence claimed the life of Lexsis Ray, 17, as she walked n Little Haiti. Days later, in Liberty Square in July, a toddler was struck in the foot by a stray bullet and her uncle, the shooter's target, was critically injured, according to the Miami Herald.
Black, the president of Liberty City Trust, and volunteers with other organizations, fanned out around Liberty City on Tuesday night to talk to residents about reporting crime and to complete surveys -- getting basic information about their households and asking residents what kinds of crime they see, whether they feel safe at home and what concerns they have.  The goal was to knock on about 100 doors on four streets, give residents cards to report crime and survey residents about crime and changes they would like to see.

Even the church where the group met, Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church, has been victimized. Last summer, members were robbed at gunpoint and days later the church was burglarized. Black described the initiative as a neighborhood crime watch and said teams will go out every few months to hand out materials. ``We're tired of all this going on in the community,'' said Black, whose organization works to revitalize Liberty City. ``When the community takes control by reporting crime, our neighborhood becomes safer.''Tuesday night, volunteers covered several blocks in Liberty City -- from Northwest 12th to 15th avenues between Northwest 58th Terrace and 62nd Street. It is time many more residents in other crime-ridden communities got together and say enough is enough. They have to fight to reclaim their communities from a bunch of armed thugs hellbent on wreaking havoc on the lives of innocent people. It is also time that the no-snitch mentality is cast aside, in an effort to help police take criminals off the streets.

Predominantly Black Jubilee Christian Church, Mattapan Courts, Team Up to Offer Fugitives "Safe Surrender" Under New Program

Should a church get involved in the surrendering of fugitives? The Jubilee Christian Church in Mattapan, MA, is setting up a makeshift-courthouse, for fugitives looking for sanctuary and hoping to clear outstanding warrants under New England's first-ever "safe surrender" program, according to the Boston Herald. Bishop Gideon Thompson, said the church's involvement isn't a scam, but a "way for for them to get rid of the burden they carry."
With a whopping 57,000 outstanding warrants issued out of Boston district courts, judges, prosecutors, probation officers and community leaders are being recruited to help deal with the expected onslaught of outlaws at Jubilee Christian Church on Blue Hill Avenue between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Oct. 6-9.

Most of the warrants can be cleared by payment of fines, promise of community service or scheduling of a new court date. Source
Well, if you want to clear your name, then visit Jubilee Christian Church to lighten your load. I wonder if the church will be compensated for it's "open arms" policy? Why are black churches so accepting? I can't seem to find one white church with a similar program in Boston. Mattapan, the once predominantly Jewish neighborhood, is now largely comprised of African Americans and Caribbean Americans having a population of 37,486, with over 77% African American and Caribbean American.
