SHOCK: Maria Cartagena, 81, Arrested on Murder Charges After Shooting Neighbor, Iraida Palmiera, 78

Maria Cartagena, 81, arrested on attempted murder charges for shooting neighbor, Iraida Palmieri, inside Queens apartment building.

SHOCK:  Maria Cartagena, 81, was arrested on charges of attempted murder after shooting her Rego Park, NY, neighbor, Iraida Palmieri, who is the wife of five-time Grammy Award winner and latin jazz great Eddie Palmieri. Talk about granny gone nuts!
Palmieri said Cartagena has knocked his wife down and threatened her in the past. MyFoxNY is also reporting that Mrs. Palmeri was in the elevator bringing down recyclables when the door opened at the 4th floor.  Cartagena was standing there.  The family says Cartagena said "move out of the way" and then shot her. The bullet ended up in the back wall of the elevator. Source: MyFoxNY
Cartagena is reportedly in the Queens House of Detention, where she is awaiting arraignment.  The gun used in the commission of the crime was a .38 revolver and is legally registered to her husband. The idea that this woman could spend the rest of her life in prison is disheartening. I wonder what in the world drove her to commit such an unspeakable act of violence?
