Itawamba County School District Cancels Senior Prom After Lesbian Student Demands to Bring Her Girlfriend & Wear a Tuxedo

Itawamba County Agricultural High School cancels prom after lesbian student, Constance McMillen, demands to bring girlfriend as her date.

Drama in Mississippi. The Itawamba County school district has decided not to host a prom at Itawamba County Agricultural High School slated for April 2, after Constance McMillen, 18, demanded she allowed be to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. The school district's policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the school district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow the teen to attend with her lover. Aren't there more important things the state of Mississippi should be focusing on? The young lady should be allowed to take her significant other to the prom.

The school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events." The ACLU said a school policy banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights. So, I am guessing, if two kissing cousins want to come to the prom as a couple, that would be okay by the American Civil Liberties Union, right?

Mississippi is very slow to change, as was the case in the struggle for civil rights for blacks in this country. According to the AJC, Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. In nearby Pontotoc County, Miss., more than a decade ago, school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.

Personally, I would not vote in favor of gay marriage, but I do realize that people have no choice over who they love and I respect that, therefore, I give this young lady credit for being brave and true to herself. UPDATE#1:  A lawsuit has been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and alleges that officials at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi, are violating the student's First Amendment right to freedom of expression.
