"Precious" sweeps the Spirit Awards Friday, will it stage an upset at the Oscar Awards Sunday night?
Will we see a "Precious" upset at the Oscar Awards Sunday night? Well, "Precious," the harrowing tale of an incest victim's struggle for survival and self-acceptance, swept the Spirit Awards on Friday, taking home five prizes at the independent film's version of the Oscar Awards. The film's total haul included best feature, director, and first screenplay. Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe took home honors for supporting and female lead, respectively.Mo'Nique played her tail off int he movie as an abusive mother, who many people just loved to hate, like Danny Glover in "The Color Purple." Mo'Nique is on a winning ride, which I must add is well-deserved. She deserves every accolade she has won from this movie. Much credit should be given to Sidibe, 26, who was pulled from relative obscurity to play an illiterate schoolgirl who was impregnated by her stepfather. Her story is an impressive one. Her mother, a great singer in her own right, still sings in the subways of New York City, instilled in her daughter the ability to dream and dream big.
The film, whose full name is "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," also won the screenplay award for Geoffrey Fletcher. Much credit should be given to Lee Daniels, who directed the movie. He had a vision when he decided to go on this journey. With $10 million in funding from Denver couple, Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, he sought out the best talents for the movie and pulled it off. Some critics feel that the movie is airing dirty laundry in many families, but if the truth be told, it was a riveting movie.
