Georgia resident Robert Gary Jones killed instantly after being struck by small plane making emergency landing on Hilton Head beach.
Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., was minding his own business when he was killed instantly after being hit from behind by a small plane making an emergency landing on Hilton Head Island Monday evening. According to media reports, the single-engine plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield. It seems as though Jones did not see or hear the plane, an Experimental Lancair IV-P, which was gliding. He was jogging and listening to his iPod. Joheida Fister, a spokeswoman for the Hilton Head Fire and Rescue Department said the pilot and passenger were not injured. She also said the plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and tried originally to make it to Hilton Head Airport.
Federal Aviation Administration records reportedly show the aircraft was registered to Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., with a certificate issued in 2004.
