Detroit to close 45 schools over the next five years amid falling enrollment.
More school closings coming. This time it will affect Detroit Public School system. According to
media reports, a $1 billion plan from Detroit Public Schools' emergency financial manager calls for closing 45 schools during the next five years. Lost is the fact that this will have an adverse effect on the black population.
The district expects an enrollment drop of about 30,000 students during that time. Robert Bobb plans to release possible closing dates Wednesday. Bobb's plan calls for closing 45 schools between 2010-2015, renovating some and consolidating others.
The district projects Detroit's full-time, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade enrollment will fall from nearly 88,000 to under 57,000 in five years. Source: News My Way
Detroit is no stranger to school closings. Three years ago the city reportedly closed 35 buildings. This latest news comes on the heels of Kansas City, Mo., school district's announcement that it plans to close 28 out of 61 of its schools. Just great. We can build more prisons, but we just can't find a way to keep our educational system on par with other countries.
