Brett M. Sloppy has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as the truck driver in the off-road race crash in the Mojave Desert Saturday, killing eight people and injuring 12.
Sloppy was behind the wheel of a modified Ford Ranger that hurtled over a jump and slammed in an area where hundreds of spectators were standing.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and no charges are expected to be filed. According to MSNBC, CHP officer Joaquin Zubieta said state vehicle codes don't apply because it was a sanctioned racing event held with the approval of the federal Bureau of Land Management, which owns the land in the area.
