Black couple Comedian George Willborn & his wife, Peytyn, accuse white couple, Daniel & Adrienne Sabbia, of discrimination for refusing to sell couple their Chicago home.
Chicago native and comedian George Willborn and his wife, Peytyn, made a $1.7 million offer on a 5-bedroom house, which sellers Daniel & Adrienne Sabbia accepted, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. One would think, in this tough real estate market, the Sabbias would be willing to sell their property to anyone with money in hand, but they allegedly chose to discriminate against Mr. Willborn and his wife, who are black. The Willborns have also accused the Sabbias agent, Jeffrey Lowe of Prudential Rubloff Properties, of discrimination, according to the Chicago Tribune. George Willborn co-hosts the syndicated "Michael Baisden Show."The Sabbias reportedly refused to sign the sales contract and HUD investigators were told Mr. Sabbia "expressed a preference not to sell his home to an African-American," according to the Chicago Tribune. HUD alleges that the Sabbias and their agent violated the Fair Housing Act when they discriminated against the couple and their family, by not following through on the sale of the home in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
What's even more despicable is the fact that the home was listed for sale for $1.799 million and had been for sale for almost two years when the Willborns toured it in early January, the complaint filed with HUD's office of administrative law judges, according to the Chicago Tribune. George Willborn and his family did not deserve this treatment, but it is further proof that blacks and Latinos continue to face discrimination in this country.
