Regina Lofton Charged with Endangering Lives of Twin Daughters, Kimora & Kimari Roberson, Found Dead in South Side Chicago Home

Regina Lofton charged with endangering lives of children, in the deaths of twin daughters, Kimora & Kamari Roberson, found dead in her South Side Chicago home.

Regina M. Lofton, 21, who lives in a Chicago South Side neighborhood, was charged Friday with endangering the lives of her two one-year old twin daughters, who died Thursday. According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cook County medical examiner's office said the twins, Kimora and Kimari Roberson, each weighted 13 pounds at the time of their deaths. Autopsies have concluded the toddlers died of heat-related hyperthermia. Their deaths have been ruled a homicide.

Lofton, who was charged with a class 3 felony, faces up to 12 years in prison on the charge and will appear in bond court Saturday. According to the Sun Times, a contributing cause to deaths of the twins was “failure to thrive due to maternal neglect.” It's amazing that this woman, at age 21, has a 6-year old, 3-year-old and had recently given birth to a premature infant, who is reportedly still hospitalized.

According to the Sun Times, the twins were found unresponsive by their mother in a room in the Wentworth home Thursday evening. Though sources said the girls had been dead for several hours before police officers arrived. This is a sad case of neglect. I guess it's safe to say these twins were not being seen regularly by a pediatrician. If that had been the case, the low body weight of both girls would have raised concern by the doctor.

This is a tragic occurrence. The lesson for anyone is that a heat wave can have deadly results for children and the elderly. Care must be taken to ensure they are properly hydrated and stay cool. The was reportedly an air conditioner in the home, but it's not clear if it was in working order.
