First Lady Michelle Obama's office sparks controversy after black British designer Bunmi Olaye commissioned to create new coat.
The Drudge Report is being a hater today. Featured quite prominently on the site is the caption:
White House calling: Please will you make a coat for Michelle... This has to do with a young London fashion designer, Bunmi Olaye, who has been commissioned by US First Lady Michelle Obama. Here's my first question, who cares? This seems to irk some members of the right wing such as Matt Drudge. I am a little surprised that she would seek the services of a foreign design house rather than one in the U.S. I can also make the argument that this seems contrary to the image the Obamas have tried to live up to as being fiscally responsible. This is clearly out of touch with Main Street. You see, Main Street can't call up a British designer and commission a new and expensive coat. Still, we can't be oblivious to the fact that the Obamas entered the White House fairly wealthy. Here's an excerpt from the
London Evening Standard:
Bunmi Olaye, 27, who runs Bunmi Koko with her partner Francis Udom, was given the honour after sending a prospectus of her designs to the White House. Soon after a call came to the couple from Washington asking if a coat could be made for Mrs Obama.
Mr Udom said: “Someone said they were from the First Lady's office and she was interested in a cream coat we had featured and could we make it for her. “We were stunned but kept calm and said we would make her a coat in September. I hope she likes it.”
She was born in Nigeria but moved to England at the age of 14 to go to boarding school in Hertfordshire.
The problem is Michelle Obama can't please everyone. First blacks were up in arms because the inaugural gown she wore wasn't made by a black designer. Now, Matt Drudge is ticked off or just being nasty because they asked a black designer from England to make the coat. I guess the bigger question for me is whether or not FLOTUS is going to pay for that gown or will it be a walking advertisement for Bunmi Olaye's design house. I wonder what Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton's offices did when they were first ladies. Do you think it was tacky of Mrs. Obama's office to ask for a coat to be made or this is much ado about nothing?
