Marine Cpl. Johnathon Clinton Rodriguez, 21, Accidentally Shot to Death by Fellow Marine Lionel Loya Over Texas-Nebraska Football Game
Cpl. Johnathon Clinton Rodriguez, 21, a North Carolina-based Marine, was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow Marine, Lionel Loya, 23, on Sunday as the two men argued over a football game. Rodriguez, an aircraft electrical systems technician based at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, was reportedly shot in the chest around 1 a.m. at an off-base home and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to The Daily News, Loya was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus told The Daily News that Rodriguez and Loya were watching the Texas-Nebraska football game at Loya’s home when they began to argue. Cyrus said the argument led to a scuffle, which led to a gunshot. A .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered from the scene.
Rodriguez joined the Corps in May 2007. He served one tour in Iraq. Loya was arrested by civilian police and later turned over to military authorities.
