Jig-A-Loo. What comes to mind when you see the word? Hmmm. Let's see. Could it be "jigaboo?" Marty Owings, of Radio Free Nation, saw some shelves at a Menard's store in Minnesota neatly stacked with cans of Jig-A-Loo lubricants. For those of you who don't know about the racist connotations behind the word jigaboo, let me enlighten you. Jigaboo is a derogatory word used to describe very dark-skinned African Americans with exaggerated facial features -- big lips, broad nose, etc. It has also been used among lighter-skinned African Americans to refer to those of a very dark complexion (as in Spike Lee's movie "School Daze").
Jig-A-Loo is a registered trademark of Jig-A-World Inc., which is based in Canada. Jig-A-Loo Canada Inc., was founded in 2006 by David Gilmour, President & CEO and Bernard Allaire, Chairman of the Board of Directors. The company operates five subsidiaries: Jig-A-Loo USA Inc., Jig-A-Loo Canada Inc., Jig-A-Loo Europe SA, Jig-A-Loo France SA and Polyethics Inc.
What is Jig-A-Loo? The company states that it is an invisible all-around lubricant and water-repellent with a myriad of practical uses around the home.
I am really surprised that this product flew under the radar with such a name, which sounds like a play on jigaboo. Sorry, but if I was out looking for such a product, I think it's safe to say that I would definitely not purchase anything with such a name.
