Joshua Powell, Husband of Missing Utah Woman, Susan Powell, Retains Defense Attorney Scott Williams

West Valley City resident, Joshua Powell, retains defense attorney in wake of Susan Powell's disappearance a week ago.

Would you lawyer up right away if you are innocent and haven't been named a suspect in any crime? Most people wouldn't, especially if they had nothing to hide. Joshua Powell, of West Valley City, UT, did just that. His wife, Susan Powell, 28, has been missing for a week now and the story he is telling police just doesn't add up. Still, Capt. Tom McLachlan said that he is not considered a suspect or a person of interest. It is being reported in the Salt Lake Tribune that Mr. Powell has retained defense attorney Scott Williams.
Susan Powell's father, Charles Cox, was in West Valley City over the weekend meeting with investigators and lending his help in trying to find his daughter. Cox said Saturday that when police initially entered his daughter's home on Dec. 7 to check on the missing family -- fearing possible carbon monoxide poisoning -- that they found two fans blowing on a wet spot. He didn't know where in the house the spot was or what caused the spot.

Cox last spoke to his daughter Dec. 3, when they talked about a box of Christmas toys he sent their family. He learned Susan was missing Dec. 7, and the following day he spoke to his son-in-law for the only time since her disappearance. Joshua Powell told him he last saw her at about 12:30 a.m., when she went to sleep, Cox said. That wasn't an unusual time for her to go to bed, he said. Powell did not tell him what he has told police and media, which is that he went camping in Tooele with his two sons, ages 2 and 4, at about midnight, Cox said. Let's be realistic. Who goes camping in bitterly cold weather with two kids ages two and four in tow, especially at midnight? Still, that doesn't mean he killed or harmed his wife, but it does make one wonder what was really going on in that home and what really happened to Susan Powell. It will be interesting to hear what statements the lawyer will issue in the coming days.
