Illinois Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk says he simply "misremembered" the details around the "Intelligence Officer of the Year" award he claimed to have won but didn't.
How do you "misremember" major details about your military service? Well, Illinois Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk did just that. He has struggled to explain how he was able to exaggerate his military record despite the fact that he was a decorated Naval intelligence officer. What's also amazing is how little the right wing media has focused on this blunder. It turns out the "Intelligence Officer of the Year" award he listed on his resume and bragged about, was a group medal awarded to his Naval unit.
"I apologize to you and your readers for misstatements made by me and my campaign," Kirk told the Sun-Times. The North Shore Republican launched his apology tour to the media after that and other exaggerations of his record blew up in the middle of his campaign for U.S. Senate this week.
"The last time I was in Iraq I was in uniform, flying at 20,000 feet, and the Iraqi Air Defense network was shooting at us," Kirk said in Congress. But he clarified Thursday that while he heard reports of enemy fire, he cannot be sure his plane was ever fired on in Iraq or Kosovo.
"I want to be very contrite and say there is a casualness with which I sometimes describe military details," Kirk conceded. "And if it gave the impression that my military record is larger than it was, I want to apologize." Source: Sun Times
Kirk has used his military record to explain why he is a good candidate for the Senate, but that very issue has become a liability for him. I wonder what other details he "misremembered?" Sen. Mitch McConnell, how come you are so quiet on this lie?
