Fourth grade teacher, Jaretta Hamilton, fired from Orlando Christian school for having premarital sex that led to pregnancy.

I have heard of some crazy things in the news, but this one takes the cake. Fourth grade teacher, Jaretta Hamilton was reportedly fired from Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Fla., because she engaged in premarital sex and became pregnant. Let me backtrack. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Ms. Hamilton notified her supervisors in April 2009, that she had recently gotten married and was pregnant. The administrators wanted to know when she conceived. I wonder what the reaction would be if this happened to a white teacher? Didn't Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker and others engage in extramarital affairs (Haggard allegedly with a male prostitute) and were embraced with open arms? Wasn't Jesus Christ conceived of a single woman, Mary?

After Hamilton admitted that her child had been conceived about three weeks before her February 20, 2009, wedding, the school fired her. Now she's suing in federal court.....

A July 20, 2009, letter signed by school administrator Julie Ennis explains why the school's administrators thought they had to fire Hamilton:

"Jarretta was asked not to return because of a moral issue that was disregarded, namely fornication, sex outside of marriage," the letter reads. "The employment application, which she filled out, clearly states that as a leader before our students we require all teachers to maintain and communicate the values and purpose of our school." What this woman did in the privacy of her own home was none of the school's business. How about all those so-called pastors, priests and nuns who are engaging in sexual immorality? It will be interesting to see how this plays out. As much as I am disgusted with the school's actions, since they are a private, Christian school, then they may be within their rights to fire her. If they think there are other single teachers on staff who aren't having sexual relations, they are sadly mistakened. What a bunch of Bible-toting hypocrites! This is the risk we run when we allow white evangelical wingnuts to hijack our rights in this country for their narrow interpretation of the Bible.
