Andrew Carel & friend, who are white, were banned from graduation ceremony after taunting black students by hanging bananas on a fishing line in a stairwell.
A prank at an Auburn high school just went a wee bit too far. Andrew Carel and his friend were banned from Saturday's graduation ceremony, while another student was arrested, accused of assaulting a school security guard. According to
NBC News 2, Carel, who is white, said he and a friend, "bought the bananas, got about three feet of fishing line, and the tied them up on the balcony."
Carel said that location was chosen because of the nickname that stairwell has received for the black students who gather there. "They all hang out under the stairs," he said, "and we just call it the jungle because... that's what even the black people call it too," he said. Carel, who is white, said the prank was meant to be a humorous exchange between friends of both races who routinely crack off-color jokes at each other. Carel said he was not the one who thought up the prank, but was one of the two students who put it into action. Source
It is a real shame that he lost the right to attend his graduation ceremony, but that prank was racist. He knew quite well that such an off-color prank would have been considered racist and subject to repercussions.
