Kshitij Shrotri, who received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 2008, slashed one person with a samurai sword inside the Weber Space Science and Technology Building on the school's campus at about 1:20 p.m. Shrotri, 33, also injured Robert J. Turner, a campus police officer, who was trying to subdue him.
He was arrested and is being held in the Fulton County Jail on an aggravated assault charge. According to media reports, the student, Samer Tawfik, who was slashed, is currently working on a postdoctoral fellowship at the university, which is located in northwest Atlanta.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Shrotri was born in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He received a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Maharashtra Institute of Technology, University of Pune and has a M.S. Engr. in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering from Purdue University before he attended Georgia Tech.
The victim and attacker were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. No motive for the attack was disclosed by the police. Shrotri will be arraigned Friday, 11 a.m. and police have said more charges may be added.
