Mohawk Council in Kahnawake, Montreal, issues eviction notices to 26 non-natives living in South Shore community. Says they are breaking Mohawk law.
I never heard of Kahnawake until I came across an article about the Mohawk Council's decision to send eviction notices to non-natives who live in the South Shore community in Montreal. According to CTV Montreal, band councilors say their laws interdict non-natives from living on their land, and so they are giving several dozen people ten days to leave the reserve. That directive is aimed at the whites living in the community. Well, this is a change. It's usually Caucasians who try to keep blacks, Latinos and other ethnicities from living in some of their communities. Still, the action of the Mohawk Council is very disturbing, heartless and racist.
According to CBC, band council members went door-to-door Monday, issuing 26 eviction notices to those they say have no right living in the community according to Mohawk law. Grand Chief Michael Delisle said the non-native residents have become a growing concern in the community just south of Montreal on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
