A 3.8 magnitude earthquake rocked in the west suburbs of Chicago, near Geneva at about 3:59 a.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake hit an area about five miles east of Sycamore, or about 4 miles west/northwest from Virgil, according to USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughn. She said she has not heard of anyone being injured and does not know about damages as of 4:20 a.m. It occurred at a depth of 3.1 miles.
According to media reports, sheriff's dispatchers near the epicenter in Kane County say they've been flooded with calls from startled residents. But spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler says no injuries or damage have been reported. Residents have reported being tossed out of bed and finding books and tools scattered across the floor.
Ever since the massive earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, we have had one earthquake after the next. Nerves are frayed, but thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries.
