Drama at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Six chaplains have resigned from their volunteer positions since August. Why? According to the Charlotte Observer, one chaplain said the sudden resignations are a result of the department admitting a new chaplain who is gay, Rev. Floretta Watkins. Doesn't this remind you of the Jim Crow era where blacks had separate entrances, water fountains, were denied service at restaurants and lunch counters, an equal education and so on just because of the color of their skin?
The chaplain said those who departed felt they had no choice but to leave because of their churches' teachings about homosexuality. According to Cedar Posts and Barb Wire Fences, the names of the chaplains are: Jack Munday (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association), Pastor Daren McGrew (Grace Covenant Church), Pastor Bill Fogarty (First Baptist Church of Weddington), Rev. Rollo Leimer (Emeritus, Resurrection Lutheran Church), Rev. Hugh Foy (Gateway Baptist Church), and Kristina Franklin. Why am I not surprised that a member of an organization related to Billy Graham is included in this shameful list?
Shouldn't the goal of any police department, including its employees and volunteers, to be inclusive and not exclusive? What if all the chaplains were white and they refused to work with a black chaplain? This is a throwback to a dark and bloody chapter in America's history, where being black was literally a crime.
