Residents of Predominantly Black SC Neighborhood Protest Confederate Flag at Home of White Woman, Annie Chambers Caddell

As much as I shudder at the thought of the racism under the Confederacy, I can't agree with the continuing protests of residents of Brownsville, a predominantly black neighborhood near Charleston, South Carolina, against the Confederate flag being flown in the home of Annie Chambers Caddell, a white woman.

According to the Post & Courier of Charleston, 70 people marched and sang civil rights-era anthems Saturday in front of Caddell's home. According to The State, she told the newspaper after the march that she won't take down the Civil War emblem that is viewed by many as a racist symbol. Yes, I can understand many blacks being distrustful of the Confederacy and its emblems, but this woman is within her rights to fly this flag.

About 30 people brought more Confederate flags to Caddell's property Saturday and stood with her to show their support, according to The State. Considering the economic woes we continue to face as a country, do we really need to start arguing about the Confederate flag and the right of a homeowner to fly one?
