Fernando Mateo, president of NY State Federation of Taxi Drivers, said it's okay for cab drivers to racially profile potential black and Latino passengers.
The last person I would expect to hear a call from for racial profiling is a Hispanic. Fernando Mateo, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, did just that. According to MyFoxNY, he told cab drivers that for their own protection they should profile potential passengers who are black and Latino. Let me just add that he reportedly identifies himself as both black and Latino, so go figure.Mateo made his comments this week after a livery cab driver was shot several times by a man police describe as Hispanic. The suspect was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, which Mateo has said is a red flag. The private cab driver was fighting for his life after being shot at least four times by a robber who ended up getting less than $100.Sorry, but I emphatically denounce his statements as insensitive and downright disgraceful. Not every black or Latino hailing a cab is a criminal. So that is a flawed and dangerous thought to plant in the minds of cab drivers. I won't call his comments racist. They are more absurd than anything I have heard in a long time. The reality is there must be a better way to handle potential customers who are up to no good. I can completely understand someone raising suspicion if the hood of their sweatshirt or jacket is pulled down around their face in the middle of summer.
Dramatic video released by New York police showed the struggle between the gunman and a driver. Trevor Bell, 53, was working a late shift in Queens Friday, when he picked up a passenger on Merrick Boulevard just after 9:00pm and dropped him off at 122nd Street and Sutter Avenue in South Ozone Park. The shooter had negotiated the fare before climbing into the car, police said but opened fire when he reached his destination. Source: MyFoxNY
