New black television network, PunchTV, set to launch on DirecTV in summer 2011, with slate of celebrity heavy-hitters such as Sheryl Lee Ralph and seeks to address unmet entertainment needs of 41+ million black viewers.
Move over BET and TV One, PunchTV aims to take away some of your market share.
Punch TV Network will launch on DirecTV this summer. The network boasts it has a 90 percent black ownership and sees itself as a vehicle to "address the unmet entertainment needs of the country's 41+ million African American viewers." I certainly hope so because BET is too ghetto for me and TV One doesn't have many shows that pique or even hold my interest. Wow, there's nothing like perpetuating a stereotype with a punch bowl of what could be considered Kool-Aid, right?
Punch TV is the only African American network that brings a roster that includes such a high percentage of new programming. Marketing research reveals that African Americans tend to be trendsetters in areas such as apparel, automobiles, and food. Punch TV has incorporated this pattern into its core programming. Our late night show, hosted by Damien Hall (who is currently with the new jack swing group Guy), is sure to quench your late night thirst. We have a complement of original talk shows, one of which stars veteran actress, singer, writer and producer, Sheryl Lee Ralph. Punch TV has selected as one of its anchor shows, “Get Thee Behind Me”, an original secular drama with faith-based messages that strategically integrates comedy. In addition, Punch TV has acquired rights to a never seen before documentary about the life and death of Michael Jackson-The King of Pop. Source
We'll see how this plays out. Another black network in on the horizon as well, Bounce, spearheaded by Martin Luther King III. It is painfully obvious that we need an alternative to BET, since TV One hasn't quite lived up to what it promised. Let's not celebrate yet. Just be cautiously optimistic.
