URGENT: A Nassau county, NY, plain clothes police officer was fatally shot in the face Saturday night in Massapequa Park. According to the NY Post, the officer whose name was withheld, was responding to a disturbance on Fourth Avenue near Front Street around 8:20 p.m. when he was wounded. The suspect was reportedly shot and killed when he lunged at the officers. It is clear that Anthony DiGeronimo was insane and his family should have sought help for him, not coddled him. No-one in their right minds would act in such a manner. His actions caused the death of the police officer.

It is also disturbing that a plainclothes police officer was shot and killed. We have heard too many cases in which these officers are shot by friendly fire. There should be some type of signal or code that will alert officers about a plainclothes is on the scene of a crime.

The tragic events unfolded after Nassau County police got a call for a man walking the streets in Massepequa Park armed with a blade and slicing up cars, authorities and witnesses said. Witnesses said the man was wearing all black with a white mask. Source
The New York Daily News is reporting the cop was shot and killed by a MTA officer in a case of mistaken identity after the knife-wielding man lunged at police and was gunned down inside his house Saturday night. It is amazing that DiGeronimo's father pleaded with cops not to shoot his son, but look at the mayhem his son caused. The man was a menace to society and endangered his neighbors.

UPDATE#1: The name of the suspect has been revealed as Anthony DiGeronimo, who considered himself as a theistic Satanist and considered his political views anarchist. I visited his Facebook page and all his "friends" left their condolence wishes. He also wrote in his profile that he was "classy and enjoyed making a fool out of people who think they are hot sh*t." It is disturbing to learn he had a cache of weapons such as the eight-inch blade he used to slash the cars. It is a sad commentary that we have so many nuts roaming our streets.

UPDATE#2:  I reading some comments and though unconfirmed, the first name of the fallen officer if Geoff, and he was a volunteer fireman, a husband and father of two. We're working to confirm this information.
