Jefferson County, Alabama's Largest County, May File Largest Municipal Bankruptcy Petition in U.S. History Over $3 Billion Debt for Sewer

Jefferson county, Alabama's largest county, may be teetering on the brink of filing the largest municipal bankruptcy petition in U.S. history, over a more than $3 billion debt for its sewer system. Spend, spend, spend is the name of the game that got the county and every other entity in this mess. According to media reports, the Jefferson County Commission approved resolutions Tuesday to hire prominent bankruptcy lawyers and to sell bonds later in case money is needed to emerge from bankruptcy. Gee, I wonder if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. just sat up in his grave, considering Birmingham was such a racist thorn in the sides of the civil rights movement. Fancy that they could be eyeing bankruptcy to solve financial woes over a sewer system, of all things.
