URGENT: Rev. Howard Creecy Jr., president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, died at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday after suffering a heart attack.
Rev. Howard Creecy Jr., president of
SCLC and pastor of
Olivet Church in Atlanta, died suddenly after suffering a heart attack at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. He was elected SCLC president after
Bernice King declined the position. You will recall there was a lot of controversy around the leadership of SCLC, after a group led by
Markel Hutchins welded the locks shut at the Atlanta headquarters because he claimed he was the interim president. That drama played out in court. The organization was founded by
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Rev. Creecy.
