Judith W. Hanson, 67, Ex-Director of Atlanta NAACP Chapter, Assistant, Arrested for Embezzling $275K from Organization

Judith W. Hanson, ex-director of Atlanta NAACP chapter arrested and charged with embezzling $275,000 from organization. Arrest warrant out for former assistant Saundra Douglass.

Former ex-director of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter, Judith W. Hanson, 67, is sitting in the Fulton County jail on charges that she and her assistant Saundra Douglass stole $275,000 from the organization. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, officials from the chapter filed a complaint with the Atlanta Police on October 10, 2009, after an internal investigation of its finances indicated that the two women went on a spending spree at their expense.

The duo is accused of fraudulently applying for American Express Cards and writing checks on the organization to pay for personal expenses, which include expensive meals, dental work and college tuition for associates.

How appropriate is it that Ms. Hanson was arrested on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on charges of felony theft. The charges have since been upgraded to include theft by deception, theft by conversion, credit card fraud and unauthorized use of a credit card. Hanson was reportedly awarded a bond on Tuesday.

There is no word on whether or not Saundra Douglass has been arrested for these charges yet.
