Gerald Ung, 3rd-Year Law Student, Arrested & Charged with Aggravated Assault in Shooting of Ed DiDonato, Captured on TV Station Cameras

Third-year law student Gerald Ung arrested and charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of Ed DiDonato, caught on Fox29 surveillance camera.

Gerald Ung, 28, a law student at Temple University, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, attempted homicide and violations of the uniform firearms act, in the shooting of Edward DiDonato, 23. The incident occurred outside the offices of Fox29 and was captured on the station's surveillance camera, in the 3300 block of Market Street, in Philadelphia, Pa., at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to media reports, DiDonato, of Blue Bell, is a LaSalle High School graduate who captained the Villanova lacrosse team before graduating last May. Police said the victim was shot several times in the chest and abdomen. The police said the shooting stemmed from an argument that broke out on the street between Ung, a third-year law student, and a group of pedestrian.

It should be noted that Ung, according to Fox29, has a firearms permit issued to him from Virginia. The story coming from the fuzzy surveillance tape shows a man "being rushed" by a group and then pulling a gun, before the victim confronts the gunman, and the two tumble to the sidewalk, but the police sources told Fox29 that the argument started at a scaffolding next to Fox 29 where the shooting victim was bumped while doing chin ups at 2:30 a.m.

Was this an act of self-defense on the part of Gerald Ung? This may be a plausible defense since he was "rushed" by a group of people. The video also shows that he did not flee the scene, but used his phone to make a call.
