Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says he was robbed in San Francisco over the weekend as he was helping an elderly man. The former Phoenix Suns point guard said in a blog posting that he lost a suit, a pair of shoes and some personal items during his trip to attend a conference with representatives of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Johnson reportedly saw a man struggling to carry bags near Union Square on Saturday evening and put his belongings down for less than a minute to put the man in a taxi. When he turned back to get his things, they were gone.
Johnson was in San Francisco for an arts education conference. He said, in an interview, "Next time I see San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, I'll tell him the story and give him my word nothing like that will happen to him in Sacramento. And I'll hope I can make good on the promise." What happened to him is a real shame, but it is the reality we face. Mayor Newsom has railed against these kinds of crimes and was inspired to open the Community Justice Center to prosecute low-level crimes in the Civic Center and Union Square area because of these crimes.
