Carolyn Freeman, Principal at Detroit's McFarlane Elementary, Sends Students Home on Monday Saying that There Weren't Enough Teachers

Nearly 60 children went to Detroit's McFarlane Elementary school Monday morning only to be sent home because there were not enough teachers. Principal Carolyn Freeman dismissed classes for third and fourth grade students because three teachers were laid off. She was out of town and reportedly told a guidance counselor to contact Detroit school district officials regarding the lack of staffing. When all efforts to contact the relevant parties failed, she canceled classes, instead of sending the children to different classes. Is this occurring in the United States of America, or is this a Third World country? This principal knew beforehand that her staff was low.

This didn't occur overnight and her actions were drastic and shocking. That was not an acceptable course of action from her. That was extreme and she should be severely reprimanded for her actions. She should be sent home for good and any school official who was contacted and did not respond in a timely manner should also be fired.

McFarlane Elementary School said all students will return to class Wednesday. What is ridiculous is the fact that many right wingers are saying that President Obama's goals for improving the education in this country are not well-founded and are crying foul to his calls for a longer school year. The reality is that the statistics are horrible and America is being left in the dust by other countries.
