Out of the mouth of babes the truth will come. Fourth grader Terence Scott, posing the final question at President Obama's town hall meeting yesterday afternoon at the University of New Orleans, as the president, "Why do people hate you?" He seemed genuinely distressed about the harsh words he has heard people lob at President Obama. He added, "They supposed to love you," said the youngster, "and God is love." That just broke my heart.

The child is right, but that's not the reality in which we live. President Obama took some heat for only spending four hours in New Orleans, as the city struggles to recover from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, but then jetted off to San Francisco for a Democratic Party fundraiser.

The president tried to reassure the fourth grader. He said, "First of all, I did get elected president, so not everybody hates me now." But he conceded that "if you're watching TV lately, it seems like everybody's just getting mad all the time." "You've got to take it with a grain of salt," the president explained. "Some of it is just what's called politics."
