Kelly Ann Walz, 37, of Ross Township, PA., Attacked and Killed by 350-Pound Pet Black Bear

Kelly Ann Walz, 37, who keeps exotic animals as pets, was killed after she was attacked by her pet black bear. According to Pennsylvania State Police, they were summoned to the home of the Ross Township woman about 5 p.m. Sunday and found her with fatal injuries sustained from the attack.

According to Lehigh Valley Live, Tim Conway, the game commission’s information educational supervisor for the northeast region, said Walz went inside the bear’s 15-by-15-foot steel and concrete cage to clean it and feed the bear. Officials said while she was inside, the 350-pound bear turned on Walz and killed her. Initial reports indicate a neighbor shot the bear while it was on top of Walz.

Conway said the bear had been kept as a pet since 2000 when the owners applied for a license. This was no a free-roaming bear that attacked the woman. She also had a Bengal tiger and an African lion at the home. Both animals were licensed by the state to be kept as pets. Why on earth would I want to have such animals as pets? Whatever happened to owning a cat or a dog?
