What a way to wind down a year. Garrard McClendon, Chicago's CLTV host, is left trying to figure out why someone would murder his elderly parents, Milton and Ruby McClendon. According to the Chicago Sun Times, authorities have found the abandoned Cadillac belonging to the couple who were found murdered in in Wentworth Woods Forest Preserve in Calumet City Monday afternoon. The medical examiner's office said that the autopsies determined Milton McClendon died of a gunshot wound to the head and Ruby McClendon died of multiple gunshot wounds. The McClendons’ car was found abandoned in the northbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90-94) just north of Garfield Boulevard about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. Joe Donely said. A motorist called police after recognizing the car from news reports, and a registration check indicated the car was registered to the victims, Donely said.
The female motorist, who did not stop, initially reported seeing two men in the area. Responding State Police crews found the vehicle, but there was no sign of the men, Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Ivan Bukaczyk said.
State Police were not inundated with calls reporting pedestrians on the expressway -- which often happens in bona fide cases -- and there is no definite connection between the two men and the vehicle found in the shoulder of the express lanes, Bukaczyk said. As a result, State Police did not establish a perimeter or initiate an extensive search. The driver or the occupants of the car found were not in custody as of 4 a.m., Bukaczyk said. It is unclear how the couple got to the preserve and law enforcement would not comment on whether there was a break-in at the home. Hamond and Illinois state police are investigating this horrific crime. What in the world could two old people have ever done to cause this? Absolutely nothing
