John Bunz, 90-Year-Old Buffalo Man, Gets 17 1/2 Years in Prison for Wife's Murder

It is a really sad commentary when a 90-year-old man is facing 17 1/2 years behind bars for bludgeoning his wife of nearly 68 years to death with a hammer. That man is Buffalo, NY resident John Bunz and he pleaded guilty in July to first-degree manslaughter.

According to CBS New York, Bunz admitted to hitting his wife, Virginia Bunz, about 30 times with a hammer after the couple argued in March at the retirement village apartment they shared in the suburb of Amherst. He was hospitalized briefly after the attack for injuries described as self-inflicted.

My paternal grandfather was 88 when he died and I couldn't imagine him ever putting a hand on my grandmother, much less to batter her with a hammer. This is unthinkable and he deserves the prison sentence he received.
