Glenn McConnell, SC Senate President, Dresses Up as Confederate Soldier with Black Slaves

South Carolina Senate President Glenn McConnell dresses up as a Confederate soldier with black slaves.

The notion that a white Southern politician could dress up as a Confederate soldier with some African Americans dressed up as slaves is just asking for harsh criticism. According to BVX.com, the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) recently held its annual fall Board of Directors meeting in Charleston, S.C. last weekend, dubbed “The Southern Experience.” What sparked outrage are the controversial pictures of S.C. Senate President Glenn McConnell dressed as a confederate soldier posing with blacks dressed as slaves. You can't run from the past and I am cognizant of the fact that many people in the South embrace the confederacy, but this wasn't a play or a movie. Someone made a conscious decision that some have considered offensive. I can't ignore the fact that the Confederacy was driven by overt racism, bigotry and the passage of legislation that sought to denigrate and enslave blacks. Sorry, but I can't embrace this as much ado about nothing, especially since Mr. McConnell isn't a stranger to making controversial statements.
