Arizona is in the news again. This time, Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill that will outlaw the Tucson school district's ethnic studies program. What's ironic is that this move comes mere hours after a UN human rights expert issued a scathing report condemning that same law.
The measure is the brainchild of Arizona schools head Tom Horne, who believes the Mexican-American studies classes taught in Tucson high schools teach Hispanic students to resent whites. By the way, let me interject that Tom Horne is a Republican and is running for Attorney General. He came up with this idea after he heard a Hispanic activist telling a class that "Republicans hate Latinos," according to the AP.
The law specifically bans any classes designed to promote solidarity among a particular ethnic group. School officials in Tucson, believe its Mexican-American, African-American and Native-American studies programs are all in compliance with the law.
