Sheriff's Deputy Shot & Killed by Terry Brown, in Rockdale County, Ga., While Attempting to Serve Warrant

BREAKING: Brian Lamar Mahaffey, a sheriff's deputy, was been shot in Rockdale County, Ga., Saturday afternoon, authorities said. According to WSB-TV, the shooting occurred near the intersection of Georgia 20 and Honey Creek Road SE, south of Conyers.

The deputy was reportedly taken to an area hospital and a sheriff's office spokesperson later confirmed that the deputy later died. WSB-TV said the deputy was attempting to serve court papers at the time of the shooting. The suspect has been identified as Terry Brown.

According to WSB-TV, authorities said deputy Mahaffey was part of the Narcotics and Vice unit. Investigators said when deputies entered the residence and announced their presence, the suspect, identified as Terry Brown, was in the closet of a back bedroom and opened fire as deputies approached the closet door. Mahaffey, who celebrated his 30th birthday Friday, leaves behind a wife and two small children.
