Michael Muchioki and Nia Haqq (Star-Ledger)
New Jersey residents Michael Muchioki, 27, and his girlfriend, Nia Haqq, 25, were murdered in what police believe was a botched carjacking. According to the Star-Ledger, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said they were both shot twice in the head and were found near their car, which was not taken. This is a tragedy. I pray that the perpetrators will be apprehended as soon as possible. This was a senseless act of violence by armed scumbags.
According to media reports, the couple had attended their engagement party held at Delta's, a soul food restaurant in New Brunswick and then at a larger gathering at Perle, a club and lounge, also in New Brunswick. They later returned to their New Jersey City home around 3 a.m. As they parked their vehicle, they were approached by a man and two women, who later fled the scene in another vehicle, DeFazio said. Authorities believe their car could not be taken because it had anti-theft device.
It is a shame that two people with so much promise were taken from their families in a senseless act of violence. Muchioki worked as a software engineer in Jersey City, while Haqq, was an associate producer for an affiliate of Nickelodeon in New York City. DeFazio said the carjackers left the scene in a gold Pontiac Grand Am. If you have any information, please contact the Jersey City police department.
