Mark Samoline, UPS Vice President, Commits Suicide After Being Charged with Rape Last Week

According to Gwinnett County police, Mark Samoline, a UPS vice president, who was accused of raping a student at Indiana University, committed suicide Monday. Officers found Samoline, 50, dead in a room at the Residence Inn Marriott hotel in Norcross, Ga.  Samoline was a U.S. Marine Corps. colonel and had worked at UPS since 1994.  He was wearing his military uniform when his body was found by a hotel maid.

Samoline was arrested in Bloomington, Ind., last week and charged him with rape. He told authorities that the sex was consensual and pleaded not guilty to the rape charges. He was out on bond and was on leave from UPS when he was found dead. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by asphyxiation.

According to media reports, Samoline had become very depressed about the allegations and the attention from the media. It would seem to me that if you aren't guilty of rape, you would fight the charges with every fiber of your being, instead of taking your life. If this young lady falsely accused him of rape, then she needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.  This is just a sad turn of events, no matter how you view the circumstances. Samoline was married, but separated from his wife.
