Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Poland due to the unspeakable tragedy that has befallen them. Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, Maria, and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for landing in thick fog in western Russia, officials said. The death toll stands at 97. This is such a tragedy and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin personally assumed charge of the investigation.

The delegation was flying in a 26-year-old Tupolev and were heading to events to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre in Katyn forest of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret service. According to the Polish foreign ministry, on board the flight were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers.

There are no reports of foul play, but you never know. This has to be the saddest day in Poland's history. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.
