RIO GETS GAMES!!!!
Well, I am sure President Barack Obama's ego has been bruised. Chicago has been eliminated from being picked for the 2016 Summer Olympic games. It is now between Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. According to BBC minute by minute update:
The announcement ceremony kicks off at around 1730 BST, with the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games expected to be announced before 1800. Tense? I should coco.
1632: Not a huge surprise to see Tokyo drop out there - they entered today as big underdogs to win the bid - but could we be looking at a surprise to come, and Madrid pipping Rio de Janeiro?
1629: It comes down, then, to Rio de Janeiro and Madrid for the hosts of the 2016 Olympic Games.
TOKYO ELIMINATED FROM THE 2016 HOST CITY VOTE
1625: Well, isn't that a turn up for the books? Chicago are eliminated in the first round - cue audible gasps around the auditorium - and a second round of voting opens immediately.
CHICAGO ELIMINATED FROM THE 2016 HOST CITY VOTE
1623: The vote closes and the scrutineers are now checking the results. If there is no majority for one city, remember, the city with the least votes will drop out and another vote will take place.
The thrill of victory has eluded President Obama and the delegation. Now for the agony of defeat coming back to the U.S. and dealing with his critics. I personally felt he should not have taken the trip to Copenhagen, given the myriad of issues confronting the United States. Sorry, there are far more important things to deal with than worrying about the 2016 Olympics being held in Murder City USA -- Chicago, granted Rio de Janiero is no Garden of Eden either, but a South American country has never hosted any Olympic games, so this is a good gesture.

I was also appalled that the White House could only offer a weak response about the horrific beating death of Derrion Albert at the hands of four thugs, yet the President and First Lady could offer such an impassioned speech for Chicago to be awarded the 2016 games. Of course, his critics will have a field day. One newspaper has even said that this stinging defeat calls into question his ability to be an effective president. I wouldn't write him off yet, but it does speak to his ability to stay focused and on-task.
