A true corporate pioneer has died. Restaurant innovator Norman Brinker, who developed salad bars and built Chilis Bar & Grill, has died at age 78. I remember doing a research paper for a business management class that focused on his innovation which played such an integral role in the development of casual dining as we know it today. I was amazed at his foresight and his vision. What struck me was his commitment to treating his employees with utmost respect and looked out for their well-being. Traits that are sadly missing from many corporations and companies across the United States.
According to media reports, Brinker died Tuesday at a hospital in Colorado. The cause of death has not been released. Brinker retired as chairman of Dallas-based Brinker International in 2000. According to its Web site, the company now has 1,700 restaurants in 27 countries, including the On the Border and Maggiano's chains. Brinker started with a coffee shop in Dallas in the 1960s. He developed the concept for Steak & Ale casual restaurants, with its popular salad bars. He also developed the Bennigan's chain. He bought Chili's and expanded it, taking his company public in 1983. Many small business owners should study Norman Brinker and how he built his company. A true corporate visionary has left this world! He will be sadly missed, but his legacy will continue for years to come.
