LIVE STREAM: Dedication ceremony for the MLK Memorial in Washington D.C. on MSNBC starting at 8 a.m., with actual dedication at 11 A.M. EST.
The statue of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will finally be dedicated, since the original date was moved from August 28th due to a hurricane and later an earthquake in the Washington D.C. area. The statue, which features a stern-looking Dr. King isn't without controversy. There are still rumblings on why it was commissioned to a Chinese artist Lei Yixin, instead of an American. Further proof that we are selling our souls to the Chinese. There is also the dust-up about Dr. Maya Angelou's displeasure with the wording of one of the quotes -- "I was a drum major for justice peace and righteousness," which was taken out of the passage from a 1968 sermon at Ebenezer Baptist Church: "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter." She said removing the word "if" changes the whole meaning of the sentence and makes him look egotistical.
All in all, I think Dr. King would feel that this honor is too much and not what he expected. In other words, he was for racial justice and equality. We aren't there yet. Still, he was a powerful man and we must teach our children about his message of non-violence. Did he deserve a memorial in Washington D.C.? That depends on your views on what he stood for. I also think he would be very disappointed with the way his remaining children have behaved, in terms of coming across as pimping his legacy.
