Warren County HS Head Coach David Daniels Severely Injured After Attack by Players on Opposing Football Team

Warren County High School, Ga., head coach David Daniels severely beaten by players on opposing football team from Hancock High School after Friday night game.

Isolated cases of violence in sports, including recreational sports, have been in the news lately and is rather disturbing. The latest case, David Daniels, the head coach at Warren County High School in Warrenton, Ga., who was severely injured after being attacked by football players on the opposing team, Hancock Central High School, after a game Friday night. The Warren County Schools superintendent Dr. Carole Jean Carey is meeting with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Monday morning to request that charges be filed in the incident. Coach Daniels is still hospitalized.
Daniels is still in the hospital with head and face injuries. He's undergone major reconstructive surgery to his face. Dr. Carey says he had to have surgery on his injured eye, but doctors were not able to repair his tear duct. She says he has crushed bones both above and below his eye. Surgeons have had to place metal plates in his face to help reconstruct his face. Daniels has also received more than a hundred stitches. A spokesperson for GHSU Medical Center says Daniels is listed in "good" condition. Source
Nearly two weeks ago in Carrollton, Ga., parents got into a fight with players of an opposing recreational football team. The police issued citations to three coaches for disorderly conduct and obscene language. Where do we draw the line? Violence in sports is a no-no. The wrong message is being taught to our kids. Even at my oldest son's soccer game Sunday, a player, Andrew Macuga, #9, on the opposing Concorde Fire Black Classic II U15 team rushed the keeper, even though he had already kicked the ball forward and was no longer in possession of the ball. Macuga was given a red card for his actions and ejected for a "serious foul play."

In the aftermath of this flagrant foul against our keeper, a parent standing next to us on the sidelines of the said team, laughed. We were upset because this young man could have broken or disclosed our keeper's leg and knee. He deserves to be tossed off the team for taking such a cheap shot against the goalie. The result of this horrible act of violence was a severely bruised leg with fluid under the knee-cap caused by a grossly flagrant foul. Our keeper will be out for four weeks and will need crutches and a knee-brace to get around. You have to wonder where these children are learning such violence from, but some of the parents are no better. As they say, the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to David Daniels. We hope the GBI will bring charges against these young men.
