"In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family's secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance. 'Niggerhead,' it read."Politico is reporting Gov. Perry is disputing the Washington Post article. Either way, it makes for a stimulating discussion as to why Rick Perry is slowly imploding as a viable candidate for the White House.
"Ranchers who once grazed cattle on the 1,070-acre parcel on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River called it by that name well before Perry and his father, Ray, began hunting there in the early 1980s... But the name of this particular parcel did not change for years after it became associated with Rick Perry, first as a private citizen, then as a state official and finally as Texas governor... As recently as this summer, the slablike rock -- lying flat, the name still faintly visible beneath a coat of white paint -- remained by the gated entrance to the camp.
“Governor Perry and his family never owned, controlled or managed the property referenced in the Washington Post story. The 42,000-acre ranch is owned by the Hendricks Home for Children, a West Texas charity. If President Barack Obama's family had been associated with camp grounds bearing such a racially charged name, he wouldn't be the president today, so let's not sweep that fact under a rug. Rick Perry isn't all he's cracked up to be. According to Think Progress, seven people interviewed by the Washington Post said the block-lettered name was clearly visible at different points during the 1980s and '90s, with one saying it was visible as recent as 2008. Yeah, just think what Willie Horton did to Michael Dukakis' presidential aspirations.
“Perry’s father painted over offensive language on a rock soon after leasing the 1,000-acre parcel in the early 1980s. When Governor Perry was party to the hunting lease from 1997 to 2007, the property was described as northern pasture. He has not been to the property since 2006.
It should be noted that there are more derogatory names on other sites in this country, such as Negrohead Mountain, also known as Niggerhead Moutain, and Nigger Hill Cemetery. So, Rick Perry isn't the only one tied to this mess.
Herman Cain speaks out about this controversy on Fox News:
CAIN: My reaction is that’s just very insensitive…That is a more vile negative word than the N word, and for him to leave it there for as long as he did before I hear that they finally painted over it is just plain insensitive towards a lot of black people in this country.
It's almost laughable that Herman Cain is speaking out so vehemently on Rick Perry's problem, but managed to insult many blacks by saying they were brain-washed into voting for the Democratic party and being on a "plantation."
