Mississippi State Rep. Credell Calhoun Proposes Celebrating African American Day

A Mississippi state legislator is proposing that the state celebrate two new holidays - African American Day and Women's Day. Er, African American day? The bill's sponsor, Rep. Credell Calhoun (D-Jackson), said it will send a message to the rest of the country that Mississippi has arrived. Wow, really Mr. Calhoun? What if a white legislator proposed White American Day to celebrate white achievement in your state, wouldn't you scream racism?

Calhoun told WLBT that his proposal, Bill 602, would boost the self esteem of young blacks, not only in Mississippi but nation-wide. He also proposes that the holiday be celebrated February 28 and on the 29th for a leap year.
